It's what I needed...

Bicycling with my son and getting in my cardio. I put my bike in a high gear to get my heart rate up as much as possible....what a rush! We just kept going and going. It just seems once you get going, you don't want to stop. I could have gone another 2 hours or so, but had to pick up DD from work. It was so much fun and I did PLB yesterday so my legs are toasted and looking great, but mostly it was time well spent with my son....a moment in time I will always remember on a fantastic summer evening! Got to make this a habit and do it more often and next time with hubby and DD.

Just wanted to share

Charlotte~~

Awww Charlotte, that's awesome! What a great moment for you :) I can't wait until my baby is old enough to bike around town. He's only 15 months so I think I'll be waiting a while, but sounds like it's worth it. Great workout, too!

That sounds like a great time, Charlotte. You should come up to northern Virginia sometime and ride the W&OD trail!

That's great Charlotte! That sounds like so much fun. My daughter is 11 months old, so I have to wait awhile until we can both be on our own bikes and just ride. Thanks for sharing!

Charlotte,

That is great. Take every second you can with your children now while they are young, they grow up so fast. It seems like in a blink of an eye. Mine will be 25 and 23 this year. It just seems like yesterday when they were small. Quality time spent with your children reaps many rewards as they grow older. They want to spend time with you. My daughter and I are inseparable. My son, who is married, I don't see every day but not a day goes by he doesn't call at least once. Build that foundation for a life-long close relationship.

That does sound wonderful. Thanks for sharing that with us. I wish my dog was big enough to go running with me. He's just a pudgy chihuahua.

Charlotte,

That is very cool! I wish ds was interested in being active. I've tried and tried to influence him. When I tell him he can ride his bike while I run he just says "bikes are boring." *sigh* I dream of the day he asks me to help him get in shape. He's only 8 now but because of his lack of interest in being active he doesn't even know how to ride a bike.x(

Laura, that's a shame. Mallory is just like that. I though maybe it's because she's more artsy & creative like her dad, but maybe it's this generation of kids we're having that get used to TV, video games, PC, AIM, etc... all in the comforts of our air conditioned homes.

That's nice Charlotte. I don't ride w/ my sons yet but I enjoy just helping them on their little bikes. But even at 6 and 7, my 7 year old sometimes would rather play his Game Boy or watch TV and I have to say "let's go outside".

What fun Charlotte! When my kids were younger they would ride their bikes or rollerblade along with me when I ran. When I had my 3rd son, his brothers were 6 and 8 at the time and we would put him in the bike trailer and take him with us. I have fond memories of these times.

Now that my youngest is 8, I have to tell him to play outside. As already mentioned, we live in a time of video games, computers etc and the kids just don't get outside to play like they used to.

It's not super close to Manassas. It's a 45 mile bike trail from Purcellville to Shirlington (Alexandria). Part of it that I've been on are really pretty and the other bikers are friendly. Here's a link to the Friends of the W&OD Trail website. http://www.wodfriends.org/index.html

If you decide to try it and end up around Falls Church, let me know!

ETA: I just looked at Luray on Mapquest and it looks to be the same distance to Purcellville as to Manassas.

Charlotte, You sound like you're a great mom! Not only is your bike ride a good memory for you but probably one your son will cherish as well.:)

Charlotte, you have got to explain to me how you managed to make that bike ride into a cardio session! When I go out cycling with my DH I wear my heart rate monitor and I spend all of about 10 mins. in my target heart rate zone. I go up the side of the Brooklyn Bridge and it's aerobic, but as soon as I hit the top, my legs are wasted and I have to coast. My heart rate goes right down again. I sprint race for a few minutes, but my legs hit failure, and down goes the heart rate. My DH has no trouble reaching his aerobic zone because he has super-strong tree trunk legs. But, alas, mine are more like branches.

Please share your techniques. I would love to spend more time cycling with my DH.

BTW, here's a pic of my favorite cyclist:

Sounds like fun Charlotte. DH has 2 bikes at his mom's house still. We are supposed to bring them here one of these days so that we can go riding together!
