Itchy underarms?

Yep,

I got them, and I'm embarrassed. Don't know what to do about it. It has been persistent for about 2 years now. I don't need to wear deodorant since I eat very little meat. I've made my own soap for at least 35 years now and enjoy each bar. I'm very careful and try my hardest not to use chemicals or eat processed food. If I do it is only on occasion. In my minds eye, I try and go back 2 years ago and I can't think of anything I'm doing differently.

Does any one else have this problem, and could you share please? I will see a doctor after the holidays, but any relief you could pass on to me in the meantime would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone, I know I can tell you my little problem. You are in Cathe's own words "A knowledgeable crowd".

I can't say I've had itchy underarms, but I've had prickly heat before...could that be what you're experiencing? If you don't use deodorant you may need a bit of powder...cornstarch is a natural option since you're concerned about chemicals, etc.

If you make your own soap, your body may have changed chemistry too - do you have itching on any other parts of your skin?

Have you seen a doctor? You may also have a skin infection...for example, folliculitis (don't know if I spelled it right) is an inflammation of the hair follicle. It can result in pimple like formations OR just itchy raw skin. I know this for a fact because I've been fighting it for six months now. There's apparently a fungal version and I guess a viral/bacterial version. I get it on my neck right below my ears towards my hairline in the back of my neck where it manifests as red blotchy marks or what appears to be actual pimples, BUT - on my chest I just have a patch of red itchy flesh. I practically dug the flesh off of it before I had a diagnosis and cream to alleviate it.

I'd suggest checking with a doc - preferably a dermatologist.

Hi Janie,
I went thru this last year. They were sooooo itchy. I tried a couple different kinds and still itchiness. I finally went to the health food store and bought a crystal. Works great, no odor and the itchiness went away. A couple months ago, I tried the deoderant again, guess what? Itchiness immediately came back, rash and all. I went to the crystal and relief again. I'm sticking with the crystal. This was KK's advice to me and it worked. I wasn't too crazy about putting those chemicals next to my underarms, though I have for years. I feel much better not doing that anymore.

HTH,

Jeanette

Reese,
My underarms are clear of any blemishes. At my age I don't even have to shave anymore. I don't have any other area on me that itches. I do appreciate your suggestion of using cornstarch under my arms. I'll try aluminum free cornstarch after a couple of other things.

Thank you so much,

Janie

Jeanette,

I tried the crystal last night, this morning it's still itchy, but I'll give it another day. I don't need any deodorant though since I have no odor to conceal so I'm trying it just in case it works for the itchiness.

Thank you for this suggestion, I'll be patient with it.

A couple of thoughts:

My first thought was some kind of allergy or sensitivity. One that shows up in the underarm area because the skin there is more sensitive. And it would probably be something that you use on your body and not your face (or you might have a reaction on your face).

What about laundry detergent? You might have a sensitivity to one or more of the ingredients. Drier sheets? Fabric softener?

If you use the same ones that you did before the itching began, you could have developed a sensitivity to something, or the forumla for them may have changed and you are sensitive to a new ingredient.

Another possibility (?): a food sensitivity, the symptoms of which are showing up in that particular area. To test this theory, you could go on an elimination diet (you eat non-allergenic foods for a period of time, then gradually add in foods that might cause sensitiities..if you look up 'allergy elimination diet' online, I think you could find info on it).

Kathryn,

I have made my own body lotions for years. I use oils, and herbs and a lot of the times fresh fruit and vegies. I stick mainly on one or two of my favorites most of the time.

I use the same laundry soap and drier sheets as well. It could be that I'm developing a sensitivity to something. I've even thought as you did that the companies may have changed a formula for them.

I'm going to look on the internet as you suggested for the elimination diet. After I see my doc and get more info, then perhaps I'll do the diet. Thank you so much for this info.

By the way, did you get the bones? I hope so.
