I'm bored w/my step videos. Need advice.

OK so I have all of Cathe's step videos. I've never purchased any of her combo videos b/c I'm not interested in her strength training stuff since I do all that at the gym. But I've done her videos so many times I probably don't even have to put them in the VCR anymore--I could decide to do, say, Step Fit one day & do it by heart.

So does she have any cardio/strength videos that are more cardio than strength? I really can't afford to spend money on something I'm not gonna use. But I need to spice up my cardio a little. I did buy her first kickboxing video & truthfully just didn't find it challenging enough. Need something intense that's at least 30 minutes long. I was thinking about trying the new Gin Miller video but I'm so spoiled by Cathe I don't know if I'd like it or not. Need help!

Hey Maximus!

Honestly, I used to say the same thing regarding the strength training. I lift heavy at a gym. But there is just something different about Cathe's strength workouts. I truly believe a mix of her videos PLUS heavy lifting at the gym makes a great combination. Unless you are currently going to a bodypump or similar endurance-based strength training class at the gym -- I would HIGHLY recommend you try Cathe's Muscular Endurance DVD. And, if you haven't done the PUB and PLB strength workouts...you are really missing out! I've never had such great biceps and I've been lifting in a gym for 10 years.

Okay...so hopefully you will break down and try a strength workout!

As for the cardio -- the terminator DVD is great (but mixes in some endurance type weight work between cardio segments). Actually, I find that I work harder and sweat more when doing this type of workout.

Kick Punch and Crunch is awesome! I think it is the best kickboxing video out there (and much better than the kickboxing classes at my gym). If you put all your effort into this one -- it will kick your ass. Bootcamp is also a kick-butt workout.

As for other instructors, I have a LOT of old videos but just cannot get into them. Gin Miller's Intense Moves is good. The P90X stuff is also good but I just haven't gotten into it.

Good luck!

Circuit Max is definitely more cardio than strength, and pretty intense cardio at that. The strength/compound move segments are fairly short, and she goes quite fast, so your heartrate doesn't drop.

IMAX Extreme on the Terminator dvd is also intense, long, and with short compound move segments. It's even chaptered (I think) such that you could skip over these segments if you wanted to.

Good luck,
Sandra

I second the Circuit Max emotion, and remember you can do that one with leg circuits only with heavy barbell or dumbbells for some real leg firepower - or leg-frierpower.

Also the Terminator DVD - Gauntlet is my fave on that one because it has Boot Camp nosebleed-cardio intervals in it. You can also do those with leg circuits only if you wish.

You need a different kind of challenge. Stop thinking of cardio as just doing cardio. Think sports. Get down to local clubs and gyms and join basketball, hockey, football, volleyball practice: whatever. Get in a team, give yourself a physical and mental challenge.

It sounds like you are MENTALLY bored more than anything else, you could do all of Cathe's routines by heart. Stimulate the mind. Get out and run. Volunteer to run a half marathon for charity (Avon for breaats cancer, the leukaemia marathon challenge), set up your training goals and get out there and put your strong heart and legs to use, for some purpose other than "simply doing my cardio work."

Boredom and the lack of purpose seem to be your current problems. Stick Cathe on the shelf for a while and take it outside.

Clare

OMG Clare, what kind of schedule do you have? LOL! I'm lucky I can actually squeeze in my regular workouts!

I'm not bored w/my weight training routine, or even my cardio schedule. I'm not sure what you mean by lack of purpose--exercise is a hobby for me, nothing more & nothing less. I think "doing my cardio" is purpose enough. And actually I enjoy power step the most of all the cardio I do. I'm just looking for some new step workouts.

Maximus, do you have Cathe's workouts on dvd? One of the ways I keep her cardios fresh is by blending segments of the various cardios; very easy with the dvds, and very often a refreshing change. Just an idea, if you aren't already doing it.

All the best,
Sandra

I also agree with Sandra. I switched out my entire Cathe video collection for their DVD counterparts in December 2002, and invested in a 5-disc DVD player, and blew the ceiling off my cardio program. Not only are there good (and getting gooder all the time) premixes, but the chaptering has gotten so fine that you can really home in on the high-intensity cardio snippets of any cardio workout quickly.

You know, I keep reading everyone's posts about this but I'm such a techno idiot I just don't know how to do it. Plus I have a dvd player but the remote control never worked so I'm not sure if I can even do the mixes.

Here's my best recommendation if you are bored with your step workouts, at least until the Hardcore series comes out. Christi Taylor Step Heaven. Go to www.taylor'dfitness.com That will be were you can find it. It's 90 min long and complex choreography up the wazoo. The last 25 min is strength and step. I highly recommend this workout due to it's fun factor and how awesome you feel when you've figured out all the steps.

Kathy

Will the Hardcore series even have any cardio-only videos, or will they all be combos?

I'll check on the Christi Taylor thing, TY for the suggestion.

I have to agree with Kathy on Step Heavan. It's a great workout and is very convenient because of the 3 different portions. The music is great too!! I also really like CIA: Rock Steady Step w/Seasun Zieger. She's reminds me of a mixture between Cathe and Christi. She has the intensity of Cathe and the complexity similar to Christi. She also has a KILLER ab section at the end. The whole workout is around 77 min or so. The cardio is broken down in 2 segments which is around 25 min a piece. This is one of my favorites right now.

Aila :)

Maximus, have you tried Cathe's maximum intensity cardio? I didn't know if you included that when you said that you have all of her step videos since only the last portion is step. It's a great workout. Also, step jump and pump has some great cardio portions----step for the first 20-30 minutes I think and you could skip the weight segments in between the 4 or 5 other cardio segments. Just a thought.:)

RUN. That's what I've been doing after burning out from Step. It's a welcome change. Today while on the TMill doing hills, I could watch the people doing Hi-Lo in the aerobic studio and was thinking ... it's going to take a whole lot more than that to get the weight off. It was easy stuff too. Waste of time. RUN. It's an awesome alternative to Cathe's intensity. Or try Spinning...that's fun too.

There will be two new IMAX workouts, both using the step. IMAX3 will be similar to the first two, but LO-MAX will be all low-intensity blasts, similar to the stuff in Kick, Punch & Crunch (which works you good!). There will also be another pure kickbox workout, similar to KPC, from the sounds of it. That sums up the pure cardio. I'm looking forward to these, but am also disappointed that another Step Blast is not on the horizon.

Cheers,
Sandra

Terminator, Boot camp, Circuit Max, Cardio & Weights, can provide good variety and still be cardio orientated. . And you might find that the circuit style workouts might shake up your metabolism.

Tell ya what Max....grab a mountain bike and get out in the cool air. This is the best time of year for that. The wonderful colors on the trees makes mountain biking and hiking THE outdoor things to be doing right now.
