Heart Monitor vs Machine

I was on the ellipitcal machine yesterday and in 30 minutes it said that I burned 300 calories.

My heart rate monitor said I burned 160.

I know that the machines are probably not accurate but should it be that much of a difference? While exercising the machine and monitor agreed on my heart rate.

What do you guys think?

The machine won't factor in the things your HRM will. You've set your HRM to your sex, height, weight, age, etc. Because the machine has its preset factors, I believe they are generally set for men, so it makes complete sense. I'd go with your HRM results, even though it doesn't feel nearly as fun!! x(

I agree with Amy - go with the HRM. I find that most machines really overestimate the calorie burn.

Machines are usually off my as much as 3 times what you actually burned. Yes, your machine asked for *some* of the relevant personal information but what it does not do is monitor your heart rate constantly...through the entire workout. It only tells you your heart rate when you grasp onto the handles. Your HRM is doing a constant reading and keeping a record through the whole workout.

The most amazing thing is your machine HR reading matched your HR monitor reading! My monitor will say 174 bpm and the machine will say 67 bpm...way off!

Sorry! Your HRM is right!

On Thursday, I used an eliptical machine for one hour. The machine indicated that I burned 700 calories, but my HRM indicated 400. I have the F11 and I believe that it is way more accurate than the machine.
