Hardwood floors Part 2

I had asked a question last week about hardwood floors. Well I pulled up the carpet in the spare room (the one I planned to make into my quilting/sewing room) to reveal the hardwood floor. Wasn't sure what to expect. It was in pretty good shape. There are some scratches and a couple places where the edge doesn't go right up to the baseboard (about 1/4" space). We scrubbed it with murphy's oil twice to get some of the yuck from the pad up. I think it's going to take a few more times before all the residue is gone. But I love it. Has anyone heard of cleaning hardwood with vinegar and water solution?

But, I AM SO FREAKING SORE!!! My inner thighs are - well really my entire legs - so sore. As is my back. All those staples and pulling up the tackboard and then the scrubbing on hands and knees. I won't be doing my new Cathe workouts really soon. So I've got another bedroom, dining room, livingroom and hallway to decide if I'm pulling that up also.

Hi Kim,

DH and I did the exact same thing in our bedroom about a month ago. That was the only room in our house with wall to wall carpeting. We did not put it in and we have been here 23 years, so you can imagine what we thought we would find! With our dogs having "accidents" in the room and who knows what happened before we moved in! anyway, I feel for you as we did the exact same thing, the tack board, the padding, cutting up the old rug etc.

I too used Murphy's Oil soap but someone on the board a while ago had new hardwood floors put in and she e-mailed me this from the people who put in her floors. I have not tried it yet:

Subject: Ward Water
Message: Hi, Deb -

Here are the care instructions for our hardwood floor, including a recipe for the vinegar water (which they call 'ward water'). The instructions came from the people who installed our floor.

Vaccuum or sweep to remove dirt and grit prior to cleaing.

*Mist a small area at a time with ward water (1 gal H2O to 1 cap vinegar).

*Using a back and forth motion, clean sprayed area with terry cloth covered wood floor mop or dust mop.

*Do not use and oil or wax based cleaning products on polyurethane floors (e.g., Murphy's Oil Soap, Johnson Paste Wax)

I was amazed at the job the vinegar water did!

Good Luck!
