Fruits and veggies

Fruits and Vegetables and other natural foods never fill me up. I try to eat a big salad and I am just starving. I end up going to junk food. This can't be normal. I just can't seem to get full on food that's good for you. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I don't feel full from them either. The only thing that helps me is if I add protein. Try adding low fat cheese, beans, or lean turkey or chicken to your salads. Egg whites are good too.

HTH!

I usually add at least 5-6 oz of lean protein and that helps. I also add about 1/2 cup of brown rice, barley, or other cooked whole grain to the salad and that helps a lot as well!!! When I was active duty and there was NOTHING on the cafeteria hot line (or chow line), there was always rice and I would built a salad on top of a plate of rice and that kept me full for several hours.

HTH!!

Thank you. I have added protein in my salads with the same results. I will try rice also. If I'm hungry for a snack, I'll eat an apple or some piece of fruit and still be hungry so I eat chips or the like. It seems like I'd be better off not eating so many calories and just skipping the stuff that doesn't fill me up. Thanks again.

Also, adding a healthy source of fat (which takes longer to metabolize) might help. Like some avocado or nuts.

Hey Karen - What type of lettuce are you using? If it's iceburg lettuce then that will do nothing for you. Try either romaine or spinach and then adding a lean protein & maybe a little cheese to the salad, that should help.

For the fruit & vegies, with the fruit-say an apple add some protein & fat w/ it also, like a small amount of peanut butter or a handful of nuts, the combo of the fiber in the fruit and the protein & fat in the PB or nuts should help keep you from feeling starving.

The other thing I have had to realize is that you shouldn't feel "stuffed" either after eating, just feel "not hungry" anymore... it is hard to get used to being okay w/ just not being hungry if you are used to eating until you feel stuffed.

Good luck!

Try adding some chickpeas and chopped walnuts and or almonds... and some broccoli sprouts. This holds me off for a while. I find if i do not add enough healty fat's to my salad that i am hungry too soon... so i am sure to add a bit of olive oil as well.
