Dogs with Diabetes

My dog has been diagnosed with diabetes. We started giving her shots last Friday. After only 1 week, I'm not sure it is going to work out. She is already starting to avoid me when it is time for her shots and even acted like she wanted to bite me. Of course, she didn't. She just opened her mouth, I guess just to try to scare me. Has anyone else been through this and what did you do? I'm thinking I may have to put her to sleep, and I'm feeling really bad about this decision.

Hi Kelley,

I'm usually a luker on this forum, but I wanted to tell you that I totally understand your situation. I had a dog with diabetes. There are several internet sites with tons of good information. Check out www.petdiabetes.com and www.petdiabetes.org. I was completely overwhelmed when my dog was first diagnosed, but reading these sites was a huge help to me.

My furbaby was diagnosed at the age of 12 and lived for 3 1/2 years with diabetes. My dog never had a problem with the shots, but I know alot of people on those internet sites do. They have lots of helpful hints to deal with the shots.

Those sites also have an adoption section, so you may want to look into that before you decide to put her to sleep. BTW, I just adopted another dog with diabetes.

I can tell you that is really does get better. Hang in there!!!
