I have been looking at the newer rowing machines and there is one called the Concept 2. It is used by people that train for sculling. I have always wanted to try and row one of those long skinny boats with the big oars as they look so sleek and seems like it would be quite a work out. My knees have been bothering me lately and some say it is a good low impact workout and others say if your knees bother you don't do it. I found a gym that has two of them and went over to look at it and try it out. The person working did not know how to operate it so I just got on and tryed it at the setting it had and it was really smooth. I only rowed for a minute or two as the setting was way to easy and I did not know how to change it.
