Chin up/ Pull up bar question

Cathlete
I need to buy one that fits in a doorway.

Any suggestions on what kind to get, where to buy one and what a decent price is??

I've realized I can't do P90X without one. And I'm itching to do some of the weight workouts !!}(

Thanks!

It's not so much that you can't do P90X without one....the fact is, you can't live life without one. Any Good fitness store has a bar that can fit in a doorway. Some like the ones with soft, movable hand grips (I personally feel this gets in the way of sliding donuts on and off the bar - but that's completely up to you). They come with braces that you screw into the door frame. I have never used one that fits over a door so I can't comment on those.

Be forewarned, you will hit your head on the door frame. I was tired of doing this and got a cage that has a pullup bar on it. If you have room, I'd suggest a power tower with the bar built in. (you can get one on sale for $99.00) These are SOOOO much nicer and no more head banging. If you get the door frame type, make sure the bar is not loose before attempting pullups, I've fallen once when the bar was not secure. This hurts! The type that fit into doors may cost around 10-15 dollars. And once you procure your bar you will want to check in on the chinup checkin - see you there.

Briee (be forewarned - if you can do one pullup immediately - you may want to lie and say that you can't as Soosan will not speak to you:p :p :p - but I will :7 :7 )

One more thing....they do make pullup bars that brace into the wall, I'd definitely go for this over a doorframe version (again, no headbanging) if you can afford one and have a place to put it (of course you have a place to put it - they fall under any decor and always give a room an airy sort of a feeling in an exercisy sort of a way). I think they run around $50-70. BUT, get the power tower if you can. I'd give up my kitchen or living room to a power tower any day (once you have one you'll wonder how you lived without it)!

Thank you Briee !

I wasn't ignorning your advice at all, actually I've been researching power towers now. My DH is about to wring my neck because "WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO PUT THAT???" He has a point, but I really want one now.......
I'm wondering if you have any advice on what type to get? I found one that's a little smaller, but instead of a straight bar across , it has two handles (?)......don't know if I'm explaining it that well. It's on the Dicks Sporting Goods website and I'm only leaning towards it because it's not as big as some of the others I've seen and space IS an issue for me!!! I'm afraid it will limit the variations of pulls ups I can do though. Will that be a problem?

Any suggestions on what to look for in a power tower???

Thanks so much!

Becky, if I were you I'd get one with a bar. Not just two handles. I think I know which one you are describing and it will limit you some. I don't have alot of space either. But my tower is tucked away in a corner and I have to pull it out to use it. Come on over to the dark side }( }( }(

I'm so sorry Becky...I've had a crazy past few days and haven't been able to check the forums.

Catherine's right, you want a bar that allows you to utilize various handgrips. Wide space, close grip, etc. There are power towers that have a complete bar, not just grips. I get mad because they are made for men primarily when it comes to hand grips. I liked my bar because is had a "wide tilted grip" for wide grip pullups, but NOW I've found that it is really for a "man's wide grip".... I would like one a little narrower. You're wise to ask these questions prior to purchase. If space is a real issue...you may want to check the kind that braces into the wall. They are pricey, but if a power tower takes up too much room...you may opt for this. Happy bar shopping!!! :7 :7 :7 (Not to be confused with bar hopping, which is what we do over at the chinup site...as we all have multiple bars in our home and use them each hour, every day...right girls??? We're so tough (smiley guy holding tummy ROTFLOL, with donut clenched between teeth inserted)
