Barbell clamps?

Hoping for some suggestions here...

I got a barbell set for Christmas. But the clamps that it came with are SO tight that I can't even get them on the bar. I had the hubby give it try, thinking maybe it was just my weak hands... no luck there either.

Is there a way to loosen clamps? (It's the kind that is a single coil, with foam grips on each end)...or do you know if it's possible to buy clamps separate from the weights?

As it stands, I can't use the bar because I can't even get the clamps onto it, much less change weights quickly during a workout.

I use the screw-on collars as I find the clamps both difficult and annoying to use. I don't know if you might loosen the tension somehow.

Anyway you can definitely buy clamps by themselves, I bought some at

Aim for nothing, and you'll hit it every time!

My barbell came with the screw on kind and I did not like them. I went to Sports Authority and bought some clamps. The sales guy helped me pick them out, but it's been years and I have no idea what that brand was. They were very inexpensive. They probably will let you open the package in the store and try them out.

I got my extra claps at Academy Sports. Walmart used to have them, but I've only seen the larger ones lately. I think mine were 1 inch. They came in 2 sizes. I keep 2 sets so when I do PLB, I don't have to take off the clamp, add weight, put clamp back on. I just put on the next plate and the extra clamp. As for the stiff ones you could use them as stress relievers (hand exercise) until they lossen up. LOL.
