Back pain!

Hello everyone. I need opinions and advice. I went for a run today, short one only 3 miles and at the 2 mile mark I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my low back. It was so painful I actually had to stop. I was able to finish the run and when I got home I did some stretching took some IBU, so my question is how do you know if you should call a Doc? Obviously my body is telling me something. I've never had this problem before. Has anyone else here had or have low back issues and what have you done to illeviate the pain. Right now it doesn't hurt so bad but it is uncomfortable. Thanks everyone.

I've fought low back back on and off, recently its been off, thank goodness. The Dr was never able to really do anything for it. Mine was due to low back weakness and muscle strain, along with my hips getting out of whack in childbirth and being extra overweight for quite sometime. I still get the occasional very sore lower back, which now seems to strike without warning, but not so much anymore. Although I wore the wrong shoes the other day and suffered for it the next. I always found that a heating pad and aspirin worked the best for me. It normally would clear in 3 or 4 days. I would say rest, heat, and aspirin. If it feels like a muscle kink, bug hubby for a back rub, or a tennis ball over it. If it doesn't clear in a few days, I'd call a Dr. Did you step funny when you were running to pull something, or did it just come out of the clear blue? We're you running somewhere harder than usual (concrete vs grass) or up or down hill? The extra beating on a hard surface may have done it or the extra oomph to get up a hill, or the balance issue going down hill. New shoes maybe? Of course, it could just be caused by nothing, bodies seem to be good for that, too!

Ouch...sorry to hear you are hurting. Maybe your back muscles just started to spasm from pounding the pavement. I agree with the other posters. Take it easy, advil, ice, stretch and if it doesn't get better in a few days, seek professional advice.

FWIW: One thing I have learned from past experience is that even though the pain is in your back, it doesn't mean that is where the problem is. Maybe your pelvis is not in neutral alignment or you have a tight muscle elsewhere that is pulling on your back muscles.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Thanks everyone. You all are awesome. I knew asking here would shed some light on the situation. I didn't hear any crack or make any crazy steps. My shoes are super comfortable, Asics nimbus have some good life left on them. I never sleep well. I get stiff necks a lot. I'm wondering could this be a PMS "the monthly curse" symptom? My back does seem to get sorta out of wack around that PMS time of the month, never this bad where I feel like I need to crawl home halfway through my run though. Also should I use heat or ice? I never know what to use for pain. I really hope that this is not another symptom of me getting older.

I'm a runner with low back issues. Chiropractic treatment makes a tremendous difference for me. Currently, I go every two weeks. I apply heat (chiro's advice) when there are flare-ups. Also, I recently started taking two Advil before any long run of 10 miles or more, and that seems to help, too. Since you have some neck pain, I think an adjustment might do a lot for you.

Good luck & happy trails~
