Another running question...

I was going to post this one under the marathon question but I was afraid that it wouldn't get answered.
One of my friends just recently trained for a marathon and she mentioned to me that she would like for me join one with her and that we could train together. Now, I don't know much about training..but I do know that you have to add those long runs in there.
She is alot taller then me and a little bigger and it blows my mind how come she doesn't have bad knees? I don't have bad knees at the moment but I would if I ran everyday or for a long time. One of those injuries that return.
Is there away that I can train so that my knees won't hurt? Is there anything I can do? I have a $200 pair of sneakers so I now that that isn't the problem.I would really like to hear some advise on this one.

Hi Lori:

If you commit to training for a marathon just beware it does take your time and effort to make it worth it. I finished a 1/2 marathon in June and it was one of the most wonderful experiences, BUT even training for that took some time and effort.

My advise to you if your knees hurt is to go see your doctor. Make a list of questions and get them all answered in one shot before you make such a commitment.

I trained for my 1/2 with my sister-in-law and she is tall and skinny and let's just say I'm not. :) We did some runs during the week together that were shorter, but when it came to the long runs on the weekend I just couldn't keep up because she has such long legs. I had to run on my own at my own pace otherwise I wouldn't have stayed with it to the end, that I know for sure.

Good luck on whatever you do, if you do decide to run in a race, I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience like mine. One you will never forget.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the advise! I think I would feel pretty awesome after I finished a marathon to, or 1/2 a one. I went for a run last night after I posted this question.I took it pretty easy b/c I was going for the distance.I find that even when I try to slow it down for that reason, I don't b/c I have my pace set and I always run at the same intensity these days.I ended up running 14 kms and in 70 min.I thought that was pretty good. I still haven't got my mind made up about the marathon thing but it sure is tempting.I should look into it a little bit more.It would be awesome to have a goal.I haven't set any goals lately.

Good luck, Lori.....

Your time for 14km sounds awesome to me. Remember too, don't compare yourself to anybody else - ESPECIALLY in running. Everybody is made differently and handle running differently. Take it at your own pace and be happy that you are doing something so wonderful for yourself and to improve your health.

Good luck and let me know if you decide to run one. :) Marcia.
