(CBS 5) There are plenty of benefits to exercising. But new research shows exercising, especially weight training, does a lot more.

It can turn back the hands of time.

"The statistician who worked with us was completely awestruck with it, and just couldn't believe it," researcher Simon Melov said.

Scientists at the Buck Institute for Age Research in Marin County made the startling discovery.

What makes this a landmark study is that they looked at older people with no diseases and taking no medications. They were able to see on a genetic level what a difference exercise could make.

"For a substansial number of the genes which declined with aging, they were completely restored to youthful levels," Melov said.

The batteries, if you will, that run your cells lose power as you age of one percent a year starting at age 40. The study found that resistance training can reset those batteries, back to the level of even a 20 year old.

"It's the kind of exercises you can do at home," Melov said.

Melov added they don't know how long the genetic rejuvenation will last. Even so, it's all the more reason to exercise.

"It's all very good and well to be told exericse its good," he said. "But it’s a different thing to be told exericse is making your muscles go back to being a bit younger."
