Am I size impared or what? Clothing rant!

Cathlete
Recently, I've finally (after 15 years of staying the same or going up and then down again, but not to noticeably in clothes) lost the 10 pounds I gained my first 2 years of my current job, plus a couple of pounds more. BUT, I've gone from a size 10 to size 8 to size 6 (small) in pants (I've been their, but not consistently) and a size 11 in tops.

Is it the clothing manufacturers who assume most women are bottom heavy? I'm certainly not 'big' on top (though I have what I consider to be rather lovely broad shoulders---our former secretary thought they were shoulder pads and not attractive...but I digress!), more like straight up and down with a few curves in there.

I obviously can't buy outfits unless they are separates, or either the bottom will be too big, or the top too snug.

On the positive side, I finally found some pants that fit (in reference to my 'waist too big' pants dilemma of a few weeks ago!)

Kathryn -

I have the same problem. I'm not top heavy or bottom heavy, but kind of the same everywhere. I actually like the lower rise pants because they fit me! When the high waisted pants are in, I'm in trouble.

I have to buy seperates or invest a fortune in alterations. I'm only one size off with most manufactures, but its annoying.

I have the same exact problem. It's from working out. My shoulders & lats are wider than most women's, but from my bra-line down I'm smaller. So I have to buy 6s in tops & if they're jackets or nice sweaters I have to get them altered, but I have to get size 0 or 2 in bottoms. Add to that the large waist, so I have to go a size up for bottoms & get the rear end taken in. It is a royal PIA!

In answer to your question, I think clothing manufacturers make their stuff for women who don't stay in shape, which I guess is the majority of the population. x(

Yep. Same problem here. In fact, I'm wearing a shirt today that used to be plenty roomy, but seems to be getting a little more snug around the shoulders/lats. And I really have a hard time wearing the body-fitting stuff - you know, everything with spandex? The shirts are designed for women with stick arms. My biceps are too big... and they're not even really THAT big.

As for pants... oh lordy. I dread shopping for them. Simply dread it.

OMG, Shannon, can I empathize with you. I just DON'T go pants shopping. Luckily I don't go many places right now that require me to wear things other than jeans. Although I still have a very hard time finding a pair of jeans that fit. I usually fit into an 8 or 6 but I still have those lovely lumps on the sides of my thighs and some foreign growth on my inner thighs so my legs don't fit nicely into the sizes that do fit me. And then I don't know who they're making them for when a size 6 jean has a size 14 waist! x(

ARGH, ARGH, ARGH is all I have to say!!!!!

I so agree....I am 5'10" and before child I was a 6-8 and after child still in a 10 (I have found hip fat after a child does not go away as fast as it did before the child)...and a full DD up top.....I have a really hard time finding things. I think they make clothes for either super skinny people or people with no muscle and no boobs.

But I can top this....back in my day (ok I am only 28)...but back when I was in middle/high school I was 5'10" and I was wearing capris before they were cool...it sucked....I think the term "high waters" was created for me. Now, when I buy a long they are too long and a regular is too short.

Who designs clothes?? Where can I send my thoughts????!!!!!!

I have a heck of a time buying nice slacks that are long enough also. Long are too long and regular too short...

I sometimes shop at Tall Girl - but I don't feel the quality is the greatest.

There are two pants I've found that fit well, I think b/c they're cut more for juniors. Express's Editor pants (or are they Publisher pants now? Why is Express so obsessed with the newspaper business? :p ). They're low rise & small in the rear. Same with Victoria's Secret Christie pants. They come in a wide variety of colors & materials. Also both are reasonably inexpensive (compared with places like Ann Taylor & Talbot's).

For jeans I swear by Lucky. They're cut perfectly for large waisted/small rear ended women.

>Yes, Kathryn, where did you end up finding pants that fit
>well?

Embarassingly enough, at Walmart! Lee pants seem to fit the bill, both in jeans and in some more dressy brown and black pants. (I had sme of the dressy pants already, but they are now too baggy! And a pair of size 10's of another brand, that used to fit ' comfortably baggy' look like I'm a kid trying on mom's clothes!)

I'm not tall (5' 6" on a good day!), but I find certain brands are cut too short. A lot of pants from QVC are only 30" long in the inseam, which is about 1" too short. Don't like the look at all. It's one thing if they are intentionally capri-length, or somewhere between the knee and ankle. It's quite another if they are 'almost long enough, but not quite.'

Maybe capris are so popular because the length is less important?

I was just looking at some VS pants (online). What's nice is that they come in a variety of inseam lenghts (from 32" to 34") and they have the different cuts. I decided to stop in to VS next time I visit the mall 50 miles from me, to see which style works best, if any, as well as which size, then stake out the online 'sale rack'.

Kathryn,
I don't think VS stores carry the clothes from their catalogs. I was at the store once and asked the manager why they didn't carry a lot of the stuff from the catalog. She said that much of the stuff in the catalog was made by companies other than VS and would probably never be sold in the stores. So as far as I can tell, you'll never see a pair of pants in a VS store.
