Allergic to Coffee?

Hey All:

has anyone ever head of a coffee allergy? I've been doing an unscientific experiment on myself because I haven't been feeling great lately, and I think the "episodes" I'm having are linked to coffee consumption. For instance, a couple of hours or so after having a cup I feel absolutely exhausted, like I can't keep my eyes open, but am also extremely agitated (I'm a high-strung person anyway so the agitation sends me through the roof!). I also get "stuffed up" in the nose and have trouble drawing a deep breath. It seems silly that I could be allergic to coffee - anyone ever heard of this?

Bummer, I love coffee!

Sparrow,

I avoid coffee except occasionally. I find most times after drinking it I have a burning sort of like heartburn and later will feel queasy. It doesn't matter if it's decaf or regular. I think my problem lies in the acids of coffee. I have no problem with hot teas of any kind, decaf or not.

Just joining in the conversation - absolutely no real help.:7

The horror of it all, Sparrow!! Oy. I haven't heard of that, but I guess anything is possible.

*runs off to drink honorary java for Sparrow*

Sparrow, no I haven't heard of it, but you should do an internet search and speak to a doctor. Sorry I'm of no help.

I just wanted to mention to Melody, if you haven't already tried it, that it's important to eat before drinking coffee. I eat an entire bowl of oatmeal for breakfast before taking my first sip of coffee, or else I would have the same reaction you do. I'm always amazed when Wendy says that she drinks her coffee in the morning before eating. Wish I had that kind of stomach!

Sparrow,

*GASP* A coffee allergy? I pray not! I personally have never heard of that but hey, anything is possible. Are you sure you've eliminated all other possibilities for your symptoms? Are you taking a medication or some vitamin/mineral supplements on an empty stomach? Oh my, I hope you find another cause for this malady. Going without coffee would not be compatible with life for me.

Nancy Pants, I drink my morning coffee on an empty stomach. I put my coffee on the night before and have a big mug first thing every morning.

Michele

Michele- another hearty stomach! I envy you.
My tummy is getting better over the years though, so maybe someday I'll have a hearty tummy like you and Wendy do. :)

It does sound like you are having some sort of negative reaction to the coffee (or to something you always put in the coffee?)

I don't know about an allergy, per se, but my acupuncturist advises to avoid coffee, chocolate, alcohol and soft drinks because of the carbolic acid in them, which can negatively affect the part of the intestines where some immune cells are created, and thus affect the immune system.

Whatever the case, sounds like coffee isn't good for you (and green tea is so much better!)

Sparrow, that sounds just like a sugar crash. Do you put sugar in coffee? Do you use cream? Might those be the more likely culprit? (I can just hear the collective gasp around here as I admit freely to using 1/2 and 1/2 in my coffee. Caffeine is my single remaining vice, lol). Also, are you drinking before eating breakfast or perhaps eating something new (with hidden sugar content)?

Just some thoughts. I'd be devastated to have a coffee allergy! I'd rather be allergic to sex!! }( ;-) }( ;-) }(

ETA: PS: Kidding... maybe not, hehe.

LMAO Marie!!!:7 :7 :7

BTW, I use 1/2 and 1/2 also so no gasping here.;) IMO coffee just doesn't taste the same w/o it! I buy fat free most of the time though so it's not as bad...or is it worse because of all of the crap they put in to take place of the fat??? Eh..I don't care...like you Marie, it's my only vice so I'll deal! YUMMY! :9

I firmly believe my coffee habit has helped me stay away from the cigarettes as well!:)

YEAY FOR COFFEE!:+

Sorry Sparrow...I guess I got a little carried away and off topic here!:)

OMG, you guys are too funny!!

Actually I do use milk and sugar in my coffee, so maybe it *is* that. But I basically like my coffee to taste like coffee ice cream, so if I can't put the extras in it - bah, what's the point?! :D

I've been doing some research and it seems like a coffee allergy is possible, because of the mold spores in the beans, or something like that. At any rate, I love my coffee and I hope it's not that. I'm going to forgo it for a few days and see how I feel, though without my java I'll barely be human.

I ask you, how much is one girl supposed to give up for mere good health?! :p

Sparrow, could it be that particular bag or brand of coffee? Did you switch recently?? Can you tell that I am really concerned about this?? :) :)

Wendy, I use the regular 1/2 and 1/2. I used to buy the fat free but it tastes too chemical-like for me. I'm sure there are women here dropping off their chairs reading this exchange. LMAO!

Marie...I am using regular 1/2 and 1/2 right now actually. I use that over milk when I can't get fat free. Fat free is not always the easiest thing to find. It's always quite pricey w/no coupons or sales so you will find regular 1/2 and 1/2 in my fridge at times too. I DO prefer the fat free though...the taste doesn't bother me. :)

It sounds like some of the symptoms my brother had when we first realized he was allergic to penicillin, back when he was a kid. He had the breathing and the stuffed nose problems, but also got irritable and edgy, too. Might be the mold spores in the coffee bag, might be something in the coffee plant itself, or maybe something that the coffee is grown with. You might want to stop drinking coffee though--it's generally not a good idea to keep using something that makes it hard for you to breathe. I switched to tea several years ago because I suddenly got sick of coffee. I order fancy tea from uptonteas.com--love it.

Might want to check with your doctor about this, too. Good luck! I feel for you on this one, by the way--I have a bunch of normal allergies (trees, grasses, pollens), and then a few really strange ones, too (I break out in a rash from some herbal teas and the ingredients in some medicines; I get hives from the sun). x(
