advise for negotiating the price of a used car

This is such a knowledgable forum I thought I'd take the chance and ask. I am interested in a used car in very good condition. I've checked blue book dot com and nadaguide.com to get an idea of what to offer to begin the negotiations. I'm a bit confused though. Anyone with experience on this, I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

Once you decide on make and model, find several that you like in your area (the internet can really help - cars.com, vehix.com... all show what is available). If you're buying from a dealer, understand that most dealerships make more money on used cars than on new ones (too much competition on the new ones). So start by taking $3000 off the top of the price, and negotiate from there. NEVER take a first offer. And if they seem to push you into making a decision right then, get up and walk. You're in command, not them.

If you're buying from an individual owner, ask what he/she wants. Sometimes if they name first they will come in lower than you were prepared to offer.

But, always, be prepared to walk. There are other cars out there, no matter how much you want THAT one.
