5 Reasons to Eat More Blueberries

Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and vital nutrients. They contain properties with powerful health benefits, and research studies have produced strong arguments for the use of blueberries in the treatment and prevention of disease. Here are 5 reasons to eat more blueberries.

1. Antioxidants

Blueberries are packed full of antioxidants, such as vitamin A, vitamin B complex, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, iron, and vitamin E. Antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals that accumulate in the body. Free radicals damage cells within the body, leading to illness, disease, and premature aging.

2. Eyesight

Some clinical studies have shown that age-related vision loss and eye problems such as cataracts, myopia, and macular degeneration can be slowed down with the use of the blueberry extract. The studies suggested that eating at least 3 portions of blueberries a day could lead to a significant slowing down of any existing age-related eye problems.

3. Cancer

Blueberries contain anthocyanin, pterostilbene, and ellagic acid, which are thought to help prevent, and maybe even treat, many forms of cancer. Some studies have found that properties found in blueberries can be helpful in treating colon cancer, while other studies suggest that regular intake of blueberries may help reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

4. Alzheimer’s disease

Properties found in blueberries can help to slow down the degeneration of the brain cells, delaying the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Some studies have shown that these properties can even heal brain cells that have already been damaged. Research has also shown that blueberries can improve the mental abilities and concentration of elderly animals.

5. Cholesterol

Blueberries have been shown to help lower cholesterol levels. Eating 3 portions of blueberries every day can help to achieve a significant reduction in the amount of LDL cholesterol. One study conducted on animals suggested that blueberries may even be more effective in reducing cholesterol than some cholesterol medications.
