Default ? re: progesterone

So, after two miscarriages (one singleton 2/09 and twin loss 10/09) and D&C's my doctor did some basic lab work. My pap, thyroid and anticardiolipin panels were all normal. Which is good : )

Since my loses were about the same time frame (5-6wks) and my age 35, she suggested that when we are ready, that I take progesterone after my next + pregnancy test. She said that I just my not have enough of this hormone to carry the pg until the placenta takes over completely at about 10 wks. She indicated there is no significant clinical trials to support taking Prometrium or not/that there is no harm in taking the medicine.

Does anyone have any experience/success with this medication? I suppose that you would not know if it was the medicine or just a fluke. I guess I am looking for encouragement. I am not ready to try again (well, since my D&C I can't before Jan. anyway). I am just doing some research. Plus, I am even more nervous @ TTC again and the potential for yet again another loss. My MD does not do genetic testing until after a 3rd MC.

Melanie,
I'm so sorry for your loss, how heartbreaking. I sometimes lurk on the pregnancy forum and was wondering about you. I don't know enough about the progesterone...I would assume it's worth a shot though? I tried acupuncture for 2.5 months to help with my luteal phase defect and 50 day long cycles...it didn't help but I'll be inquring about taking progesterone soon. I wish you the best with whatever treatment you decide on!

I used preogesterone with my last pregnancy, after TTC for 3 years & having a 2nd trimeseter m/c in July 08. Did it work? Not sure, but I do know it didn't hurt. Basically your body needs high progesterone levels during the first trimeseter, until your placenta can take over in 2nd trimeseter.

Bethany & Melanie....I think of you two often.

Bethany, the progesterone shouldn't be used until you have a positive pregnancy test....so it's for women who don't have trouble conceiving....but have trouble carrying the pregnancy to term.

Melanie, I would definitely give this hormone a try with your next + pregnancy test. Why are you waiting until Jan to TTC? Have you considered Clomid or Femara at all?

Best of luck to you....please keep us updated.

Melanie-like you I had 2 m/c about around the same time. The day after I got a pos with this last pregnancy I was put on prog suppositories until week 10. I have a wonderful healthy 7 week old now! I would for sure give it a try!
If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to help if I can!

I had a miscarriage around the same time my first pregnancy. I got pregnant again shortly after and my doctor had me come in as soon as I got the positive test and he tested my hormone level and is was low. I used the suppositories that go around and I now have my 7 year old. Then my insurance changed and I had to change doctors. I got pregnant again and mentioned what had happened in the past. But, the doc didn't feel it actually worked so didn't prescribe anything. I miscarried shortly after. When I got pregnant again, the doc finally prescribed the oral version. That pregnancy stuck.
