Hi all,
I was at a candle party on Saturday and while everyone else was drinking margarita's and wine I was sipping on a diet 7up one of the ladies said to me " Your not suppose to drink diet soda while your pregnant and I was like What are you talking about???? It's bad enough I cant drink but now not even diet soda????? I've never heard of that has anyone else? So as the conversation continue's about what to eat and not to eat they also said no yogurt????? I was like WHAT??? I love yogurt and read that I can eat it. I especially like greek and fage. So what gives? The soda I dont really care about too much because I dont drink it that much anyway maybe 1 cup of it if that! But yougurt? |

I think they are saying that because of the artificial sweetners. The OBGYN I have now was a lot more conservative than the one I had 5 years ago and did tell me to avoid artificial sweetners. I'm not sure I think it is that big of a deal, but I did switch to regular soda when I wanted to have one. I already bought plain yogurt anyway so that didn't change. I really can't think of any other reason why you couldn't eat yogurt.
Sometimes I think there a just too many rules out there for expectant moms, just what we need are more opportunities to worry. |

Ooooh yes. The list of "don'ts and don'ts"...and conventienlty, most of them are issued from people that are not preggo (and half that never HAVE been!).
This is such a big irritation to me. Every doctor is different in terms of what they say you can have. It's up to you to interpret it how you want, IMO. The diet soda is about the Nutrasweet (or whatever they're using now). Too much of it showed at one point in time that it was detrimental to the fetus in some way. You know what? One diet soda, isn't. Neither is 2 or 3. I encourage you to read up on it if you're concerned. Yogurt is about bacteria. Just like cold cuts, soft cheeses, sushi, etc... My doc always said to cook everything before you eat it to be sure it isn't contaminated. My solution was to eat fresh food that I knew hadn't gone bad. I refuse to cook bologna. Everyone has different levels of caution that they assign to their pregnancies and then to how they parent. I've always stuck to what my mother experienced, and had a healthy kid. 20 yrs ago, people had healthy babies and no one had the kind of info like they dish out today. Turns out everyone was just fine. I've got one healthy little man already, and I those are the guidelines that I've stuck with through that, and now my current pregnancy. It works for me. Best thing I can recommend is to do a bit of homework on the caffeine, sweetener, listerosis (sp?) thing. Then judge for yourself where you need to make adjustments for your pregnancy. Then tell anyone that scolds you differently what to do with their information! ![]()

Yep, everyone has an opinion! I was always amazed at how freely people shared their (unsolicited) opinions with me when I was pregnant LOL
My OB was fairly relaxed about things. He told me that as long as I wasn't drinking a 12-pack of diet soda a day it was no big deal to drink my Diet Coke. As for lunch meat, I craved Dietz & Watson low sodium turkey (from Costco) while pregnant. I ate it from week 14 until the end with no problem. I just always made sure it stayed cold from the store to home, and that the package was eaten within 5 days or so. I've never heard the yogurt warning. Maybe the person was talking about the ones sweetened with aspartame (like Light n Fit). If you're eating Greek yogurt, I'm sure there's no worry. As long as the dairy was pasteurized, I ate it -- I love my feta cheese! |
