What's with the thread ratings?

Where do the checks & stars come from? What do they mean? Is there some kind of chart somewhere?

At the top of each thread to the right you will see a tab that says "Rate this thread". That is where you can add the stars. I rated this one. Can you see the rating?

Maybe they're for threads you've read, or posted in?

I think that means you are "subscribed" to a thread or that you responded to it. Not sure though.

I gave it a one star to see what would happen and it lowered the rating. I tried to change it back but it wouldn't let me. Oops! and damn, it says I'm subscribed to the thread. I have to see how to fix that

I wonder what a thread rating signifies. It cannot be a rating of just the original post since the words used are "Rate this thread." So does a great / bad rating mean the rater is saying "I love"/""I hate" what all of you on this thread have to say?
