Sugar Should Be Regulated As Toxin, Researchers Say - Yahoo! News
I just started a sugar fast yesterday....I am done giving myself lee-way on an occasional cookie here or there...or my real weakness: Junior Mints...I then I read this article...wow...I stopped because I really was feeling "yuck" after having sugar. What do you think?

I agree w/ the article, sort of. I started eliminating sugar a couple years ago and while it's really hard at first to get past the cravings, once I've gotten the sugar out of my system it's amazing how much better I feel....and the cravings become less intense. I think it's okay to have the occasional sugar but for me, keeping it out of my diet on a regular basis is so worth it. I love a sweet treat, especially a really good desert at a restaurant so what I do now is avoid all sugar during the week but allow myself a little indulgence on the weekends.
Good luck on your no sugar challenge! I'm right there w/ ya ![]() |

DixieGirl: it IS tough to get past the cravings...and one thing I noticed that the more I gave into the cravings, the more I craved...It was a vicious circle...so I never felt "satisfied" after eating sugar, but just wanted more. That's when I said, "Enough is enough and I've had enough."

I had to eliminate sugar and yeast for a couple months in 2009 due to a yeast overgrowth in my body and it was only then that a pesky 10 pounds I had been trying to lose for years literally melted off my body. I do eat a bit of bread now, but I still try to keep most added sugar from my life except for special occasions ( or momentary weakness, haha ). I feel more balanced in my moods, and for the most part the weight is still off. I have gained a couple pounds after hurting my back a couple weeks ago but I know once I get more active again, it'll come off. I do agree, also ,that if I let myself have it more than once a week, it becomes easier and easier to slide back into old habits, and I didn't even have that much of a sweet tooth. I just was so surprised when I started reading labels and seeing how many times sugar is added to so many things, and in so many forms- sugar, syrup, fructose, cane syrup, any of the "oses", etc. no wonder we are all getting so big! Even things like all Bran and many of my favourite cereals. And I won't even go into how much I dislike artificial sweeteners, so I learned to do without any added sweetness and it gets easier and easier.

I agree that TOO MUCH sugar is bad for you, but IMO everything in moderation is ok. These articles don't scare me. I will still be having my occasional sweets without feeling guilty about "poisoning" my body. I am healthy, active & strong, eat well the majority if the time, I don't smoke and I rarely drink. I will not deny myself foods I love. Sorry, I'm NOT sorry.
BTW, my grandmother is going to be 80 this year. She is still going strong and has a HUGE SWEET TOOTH. She eats desserts all the time. She does not have diabetes and she weighs 105 lbs. Tell her sugar is toxic. She'll just laugh and grab a piece of apple pie and pile tons of whipped cream on it. Natasha

First of all, I want to hang out with Natty's Grandmother. She sounds like fun..
Second, GMA on ABC reported that many want it taxed. Big brother-no way. People learn from experience and how certain foods affect them. My nephew when he was four years old knew enough to stay away from candy because it gave him a tummy ache. Myself-Working out consistently since 1989, I am very much aware of my body. Most of the time, with the exception of M&Ms at times, I stay away because my body goes up from the sugar high then I crash/burn from it. Not worth it. It takes away energy. Yes, moderation and portion control are my keys to enjoy a meal without guilt. |

I don't think denying yourself something completely is going to solve anything. Sugar in moderation isn't a bad thing. What I believe is worse are artificial sweeteners. I don't do them in any form.... no diet drinks, no fake sweetener in my coffee... none of it. Bottom line though, it comes down to "how much" of something you consume. Too much of anything isn't a good thing. |
