CALCIUM

How much of all these calcium items do we need to eat to get a good days supply. I can't stand swallowing pills so I just take 500 MG of calcium in the morning.

Recommendations for premenopausal women are between 1000 to 1500 mg. per day. That assumes one doesn't have any dietary habits or prescriptions that interfere with calcium absorption. If you use a supplement, spread them out over the day & don't take it at the same time as a multi-vitamin.

There are a lot of calcium fortified foods around, oj, soy milk, cereals, energy bars, so it's possible to consume too much calcium (2500 mg+). Excessive calcium interferes with the absorption of some other nutrients.

Hi,
Though it's possible to over do it on calcium, it's not a concern for most people. Only about 40% of dietary calcium is absorbed (on average). Still, it helps to know what you are taking/eating.
It is best to look for the words "elemental calcium" on labels. You usually won't see this on anything other than supplements, but you never know.
Elemental calcium refers to the absorbable component of the mineral--the part that is used by the body.
If you're a dairy eater, 3-4 servings/day will put you where you need to be. If not, look for non-dairy fortified alternatives (soy/rice milk, bread etc.)
