Barbell ?????

Hi ladies,

My DH just came home with a 300 pound Weider Olympic barbell set(not that I ever use that much weight!) The barbell is 7 feet long! Isn't that too long? I think it weighs like 45 pounds! How long is your BB? He paid $ 159 was that a good price for everything.

Thanks for your advice,
Belinda

My barbell is 5 foot long and weighs 13 pounds. When I get around to it I am going to order a lighter bar that weighs only 5 pounds.

I would be afraid to wield a 7 foot barbell and at 45 pounds it wouldn't serve me much of a purpose for anything beyond legs and maybe some back work.

EXCELLENT price for the set though and a good set for someone who can use 45+ pounds for lots of exercises so I can see why your DH would grab it up!:)

That's a standard gym barbell. Mostly used for squats & deadlifts. I use it for shrugs & bicep curls also.

You lucky girl you!

Definitely not that! LOL! I use an ez bar for skull crushers, about 45 lbs. I use 30 lb dumbells for kickbacks, & 20 lb dumbells for one arm overhead extensions.

Keep it, especially if you're getting STS. I'm guessing you'll be able to use it for legs, deadlifts, lat rows, stuff like that.

Laura,
I did order STS! I know for legs I could use the BB! I will look on line and see if I can find an ez bar or in our PX! I do all my exercises with dumbbells right now, it is hurting my shoulders! WOW! You lift heavy!

Thanks,
Belinda

Not Wendy (obviously) but I thought I'd let you know that I have an 11.5 lb barbell that came from Wal-Mart and was really cheap. I'm not expecting it to last me forever, but it breaks down into 3 pieces, which is great since I currently live in an apartment. It also uses standard size plates, so the plates that came with the 300-lb monster set :) should work with it. It's a good hold-over-until-I-can-afford-better barbell.

I'd love an Olympic bar and plates...you ARE a lucky girl.

How much weight did it come with? Considering that an average priced Oly bar alone can cost $159, that sounds like a good deal. 7 foot is the standard length, I believe.

Are the weights bumper plates (rubber coated)? THAT would make me reeeeeeeally jealous. ;-)

Gayle,
it came with 255 pounds weight plates and the bb is 45 pounds! I didn't open the box yet! I have been looking on line for the last 2 hours for better deals, put can't find any so far! No, the weights are not buper plates! The PX did had a bb set with rbber coated, but that was the kind you scew on! It would take to much time to change the plates! When I saw $ 159 just for the bar alone, I thought it was a misprint! LOL! I guess they are that expensive?
Do you use the bb for triceps?

I don't use it for triceps/biceps, but I've been getting into Olympic style lifting - cleans, jerks, deadlifts, etc. I do use the 45lb bar for overhead stuff like shoulder presses, push presses and push jerks, as well as all the lower body stuff.

The fitness center at my workplace has some decent Oly bars and they're just better for that kind of lifting than the lighter "home gym" kind of bars. I think they're better balanced.

Sounds like your hubby got a sweet deal. Congrats!

that is a great deal on the set. if you have a play it again sports nearby they sell slightly used equipment. i just picked up a standard sized one for $15. they also sell attachments to make any standard bar into an olympic bar since you have all the plates now and all. its been a lifesaver for equipment and the store near me has pretty helpful employees.

Wendy-

Thanks for the link! I would really like a Troy lite (so I can be just like Cathe & Co. LOL) and haven't seen such a great price on them. Can't wait to move out of apartment and into house!

Wendy- the only problem I have with most sites, they won’t ship overseas (my DH is in the military)! We are stationed in Germany! Thank you for the link!

Ecossaise – I did check out WM last night! What kind of bb do you have?

Kassia – there are no sports stores that sells slightly used equipment in Germany! I will keep that in mind when we move back to the states!

Gayle – I still haven’t opened it! I pretty sure I will keep the BB! My DH and I searched on line last night; no- one can beat the price!

Thanks ladies for all your help and advice! I really appreciate it!

Have a great weekend!

Belinda-

I have absolutely no idea what the brand was! It's chrome and breaks down into 3 pieces with an allen wrench and has screw-on collars. I think it's around 6' when fully assembled. Sorry I can't be more help--I already got rid of the box! If you get the same barbell, make sure you tighten down on the screws again after you put the weights on, makes it a little more stable.

I think that's a great price. Now all you need is a 5# barbell and you can place weight on them less than 45#'s. Both are great to have. Congratulations.

How sweet of him to think of you that way. He providing and supporting your interests. How cool is that?!
