Default Lower body DOMS--cardio suggestions?

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone has any favorite videos that you reach for on days that you are too sore to do anything high impact or do kickboxing moves. I just started STS on Wednesday w/ Disc 3 and my hamstrings and glutes are so sore that it had me practically waddling around yesterday..! Hoping for something that gives a decent calorie burn but isn't too hard to do with sore legs.

Sometimes in order to thoroughly "work" some of the soreness out, it's good to do some functional fitness cardio like walking or jogging, or the elliptical, but if you want a good video, I really like the old school kick punch and crunch...it's kickboxing, but there seems to be easier kicking options with lots of upper body stuff to keep your heart rate up!

On days like that I take it easy and do pilates - usually with Ana Caban. I have a few of her DVD's and like them all. Or I have a stretch day with a lot of ab work.

Thanks for the suggestions..! I recovered from the DOMS but between STS legs and trying to do step workouts later in the week, my knees feel stressed out. Think I will be doing arms tomorrow and giving legs a rest for a few days.

Hi Kathleen!

I hear ya on the lower body DOMS from STS. I think every single STS lower body w/o has given me killer DOMS. I love it! Anyway, because I struggle with cardio when my legs are sore, I either (i) re-adjust my schedule so that my weekly lower body workout occurrs right before my rest day or (ii) do a lower body workout back to back with an upper body workout (e.g. STS lower body on Tuesday and STS upper body on Wedneday). If I can't re-arrange my schedule on a particular week for whatever reason, I try to do cardio that doesn't bother my legs/knees, such as MMA Boxing, Kick Max (punching combos only), or like Jodelle mentioned, a nice long walk outside. I usually add abs and/or stretching/yoga too so that I get a nice, full workout, despite my stinging lower body.

HTH!

completely agree abt the major DOMS from STS Legs. was just suffering from that myself and still sore after a couple days, but I did MMA Boxing and though there are some leg drills in it, I was okay. i forgot how fun MMA Boxing is, plus it flies by & has a great abs routine.

it is crazy how I get the really major DOMS from the STS legs but not so much with the UB stuff.

I know it sounds crazy but I always find that kickboxing workouts (like KPC or 4DS Kickbox) really work the DOMS out for me.

I totally hear you on the STS DOMS. They are like nothing else!

That's been my experience so far too... I wonder why that is. I thought maybe it was just me cause I had never really completed an endurance leg workout or had worked out my arms more in recent history.. My arms do feel fatigued for a few hours after the workout though.

Cathe's other kickboxing workouts are definitely on my list of videos to purchase next...so far I only have KPC which I did a little over a week ago, awesome workout...! I'm trying to resist buying anything until I go through all of the cardio workouts that I already own (which isn't too many, thankfully ) and 'master' them to some degree.

Definitely Cathe's Kickboxing dvd's are good...but the shorter pre-mixes...sometimes I would just do 30 min. to try to loosen things up a bit and get the blood flowing... also Kelly Coffey-Meyer has a great KB dvd with 2-30 min KB workouts on it that are really good...called Kelly Coffey-Meyer 30 minutes to Fitness.

I, personally, would not totally avoid my lower body in this situation..but help it with a bit of active recovery such as I stated above.
