Question re thumbless grip?

Cathe, or anyone who knows, I've been working the GS series and in chest triceps/ you say thumbless grip. Yipes. I use an easy( angled) curl bar but I do not feel secure at all without my thumbs around the bar. I don't feel like I'm hanging on at all. consequently, I use my thumbs. My pinkie on one hand does not grip so a 3 fingered grip is what I've got.

What is the reason for "thumbless"? Dropping the bar on my face seems possible without thumbs. I haven't done this workout too many times yet and have about 25 lbs on the bar but is there a form emphasis about "thumbless" that I can achieve using my thumbs? .
