Default Medicine Ball weight...

Hey all -

I know Cathe will be using a 8 pound medicine ball, however, what weight will the educated crowd be getting? I'm really tempted in getting a 3 pound or a 6 pound med ball to start out with. Any suggestions?

kali :)

Along the same lines, can someone suggest where to get them as well as the stability balls? I know relax the back has them.

Thanks,

Kathy

Medicine ball - D!ck's Sporting Goods (8 lbs. $20.00), Stability ball - Walmart ($14.00 with a pump).

Hi Kali,

I haven't gotten my medicine ball yet but I'm going to go for the 8#. I can usually match Cathe's weight in whatever series she's doing first time around so 8# should challenge me. They're expensive enough that I don't want to go too light and have to buy another in a few weeks, so I'll go for the 8# and "work with it!" :)

Well, (sigh) I went medicine ball and stability ball shopping last weekend here in Toronto. No luck at Walmart (unless you want all the fishing lures you can buy!).

They did have 8-lb medicine balls at a sports chain called "Champs", but they're $55.00 Can. and about the size of a small basketball! I know that I'm probably going to get around to buying one, even at that exorbitant price, but I'm kinda wondering if a dumbbell or maybe ankle weights held in the hands would be just as good. I don't have much space left in my apartment for more sports equipment, especially something I'll rarely use.

Oh well, perhaps the best idea is to have Cathe's new series "in hand" before investing money and space -- no point in putting the cart in front of the horse.

Hi Patricia,

I got my medicine ball in Toronto at Fitness depot (leaside), I think it cost $45 or so. They probably have them also at Fitness source, there's one on Yonge near Lawrence. FWIW, I have a 4 pound med ball. I use it for Mindy's strength express, and will use it with these new DVD's as well; I don't think dumbells would suffice but you can sure use a basic child's play ball to start.

Thanks for the info, Christine!

I'll check the Fitness Depot this weekend!

Patricia

P.S. I'd even been thinking of buying a child's ball, drilling a hole in it, and filling it up with kitty litter (clean, of course!). Just kidding -- I will be getting the real thing!

Got my 8pounder at Academy this past summer for about $30. So guess I'll be "gutting" it out with Cathe at this weight since I really shouldn't be buying the DVDs but gosh darn it I deserve my Cathe.Had to miss the last set because of the lack of cash flow I'll be doggone if I'm missing this one too!! Phew, I think I just talked myself into that presale order. Just don't tell my husband, okay? heeheehee

Hi Kali! An 8 pound ball will feel a bit heavy for some exercises if you are not used to using a ball, so here are a couple of suggestions. Buy a 6 pound ball to ease into it, or buy an 8 pound ball but first start out using a lighter handweight (say a 5 pound dumbbell) until you get used to using weight and then slowly graduate to your 8 pound ball. We will show modifications with the dumbbell on all the tapes. Hope this helps!
