Are the new DVDs high definition?

I always watched my Cathe on a regular old DVD player. It broke (and took my first butts and gutts DVD as a casualty boo.... ) So- I decided to replace it with a blueray player and BAM!! Cathe in bright new crystal clear color! Never knew it would make such a difference (and butts and gutts was replaced too!! phew!)
