Workout Warriors Keeping it Together June 28-July 4

First off can someone tell me what happened to June! I think I missed it. :p

Janis how are you doing? Are your guys helping you to take it easy?

Heather have things lightened up for you?

MJ & Tara how are you guys doing?

Crazy baseball weekend out of town. The boys had a blast with the team - especially in the pool! What chaos. :D They ended up 1-2 and the final game was called after 3 innings because of threatening weather. We did make it to the van and on the road before the heavy rain hit. Apparently, there were some tornado warnings around Detroit, though we were still about 40 miles out from there.

This morning I did STS Disk 7 Chest, Shoulder and Biceps. Push-ups ugh! And is it really necessary to put the drop sets near the END of the workout. Hoping to ride again tomorrow. Looks like games the next four nights, so another busy week.

Hey Everyone

I am back!! It was a crazy holiday for the first few days as I did have to drive back from the cottage and do the audit. So that wasn't so great and then there was the earthquake... We were about 2 hours from the epi-center and the cottage we were in was not looking so good. The walls were swaying and everything was shaking. Being from Canada I have never felt an earthquake. Then not 5 hours later there was a tornado warning and the skies did look like there could be one any minute. It was close enough that each parent had picked a kid they would grab (4 parents, 4 kids) and we had the basement ready. Otherwise I didn't get much workout out. I did do a running/swing day which my friend participated in. I think I pretty much killed her as she kept saying for the rest of the week. "Yep, can really feel those kettlebells" Lots of hiking and canoeing and too many daquiri's on the beach.

Now I am in damage control mode! So today's workout was :
WU: I actually forgot to!!!!
WO: 12 min swings, 20 swings alternating with 50 jump rope or 30 mountain climbers
CO: 3 rounds of 40 sec work 20 rest
Goblet squats, 8, 11, 10
Reptile with push-up: 15,16,16
Racked Curtsy squat:L 10,9,9 R 9,8,9
Snatches R 13,9,10 L 14,12,12
Figure 8's 17,18,19

The snatches were hard because it is so hot here and my hands were really sweaty!

Okay now onto all the crazy stuff going on here!

Janis - What the heck happened to you!!!! Do you really think it's a fracture? Wow, that is crazy. I am so sad that your in the state that your in!! I am sure that you are going mental! If you are thinking of taking perkocet then you must be in a fair bit of pain. When is your appointment? Okay, I'll stop with the 20 questions! I am just shocked that your having another issue so soon after the other.

Cathy - Sounds like a crazy baseball weekend! Tornado's are no fun at all! How has your riding been going? I think that your weight gain worries will even out when you can add back in the cardio that you are missing. Diets are no fun for sure and I think that anytime that I try one things backfire on me. So this time around I am trying to limit sugar and eat the right portions when I am hungry. How are the Vibrams going??? Are you wearing them in public yet?

MJ - I hope your work settles down and things cool down in Florida for you!

Tara - Hope all is well!

Talk to you tomorrow!
Heather

Hi Warriors

Heather - What a wild vacation you had. You had it all going on - work audits, being a kettlebell dominatrix, an earthquake and a tornado, sounds positively apocalyptic. I do like the 4 adults to 4 children snatch and seek cover emergency strategy, and the daiquiris on the beach. I don't drink, but I have been thinking about taking it up again, it's either that or smoking, I haven't decided yet. (just kidding of course, isn't it lame that I felt the need to point that out?)

To answer your questions about lil ol me - I DON'T KNOW! (insert long stream of sailor-esq expletives that feature something that sounds like fuct.)

I thought, at first, I was aggravating the IT Band, piriformis and sciatica with the semi-squat hip thrust action that accompanies kettlebell workouts, but I now believe it is from running.

I thought I was being sooooo smart about increasing mileage and intensity slowwwly, but something went wrong somewhere. Hell, it could be that I am structurally unfit to run. I dunno.

But I am SOOOO looking forward to seeing the Orthopod. I ain't messing around with seeing other Docs first. In the meantime I am using crutches and staying off of it and going insane. I did find some funny websites to bookmark...this is my favorite so far.

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

My husband was making me take ibuprofen and tylenol in ridiculous quantities, but I found that being pain free made me feel cured, a possible hypochondriac, and pathetically lazy. Being in pain reminds me to stay off of it and to take it seriously. There is an upside - I hired a cleaning lady and because I am waiting around to be fed, I have lost the few pounds I have been trying to lose from the LAST stress fracture.

Cathy - I swear the pool chaos at the end of a tournament is the best part of the whole season; such fun for the kids and a blast for the parents too. The weather around you and Heather is dramatic! Are the four games this week the last of the season? I can't remember. Yay on your push ups ! Can you believe I am jealous of push ups and chest presses. Sheesh - I can't even sit on the stationary bike let alone sit! so I am jealous all the way around. :) I am turning into a slug. I have read a couple of books, bought a bunch of yoga and pilate dvds, which I am incapable of doing, and have been spending too much time looking at cooking/recipe blogs and websites. My wrists are getting a workout!

MJ - How nice to hear from you and about your angst driven tennis drills. Good for you, now that's a healthy outlet for frustration! Congrats on winning a can of tennis balls! It's nice to win something sometime! That was some Wimbledon tennis match, huh, I didn't watch I only read about it, but my goodness there must have been extreme viewer fatigue involved -mega endurance required by all participants alike! So, are you looking for a new job? I just read this one from Allie Brosh, maybe you can relate, I sure could. http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Tara - You've fallen into a hole and can't get out, right? I'd come haul you out but I might fall over and then where would we be? We'd both be in the hole! And no, I GET THE CRUTCHES! They're super cool and fun even, but you cant' have them, they're all mine mine mine.:D:D:D

See what happens when I read stuff that is not related to fitness....I'm outta control!

My husband is plying me with tea and forgetting to feed me. I can't live on toast and tea!

I really am signing off now, and if there are typos - tough!

Just a quick note this morning...

Got up and did my 5km run and then did TGU's for 10 min. I tried to not go too hard and mess up my shoulder/neck again. So I did 4 with 12 kg and then 8 with my 20lb bell. Then about 5 min ab work.

Gotta run to work.

Janis reading your post made me feel like I'd been drinking. :p Actually, I don't drink either. Never did drink much because it takes so little to make me drunk and I simply hate not feeling in control of myself. Stopped when I started trying to get pregnant in Aug '97 and never went back.

I certainly hope you get some good answers when you do see the dr. about what happened and why so that once you get it all healed up you can avoid doing it again.

Actually the pool was Saturday after two games and then Sunday from 8-10 before their game. I was talking to a friend whose son plays soccer last night and she said that there coach forbids them to use the pools when they are staying for tournaments because it can affect their play.

Heather that was really quite a trip you had! I've certainly been around tornado warnings and such all my life, but I will pass on the earthquakes! Note that I've lived here 49 years and been through plenty of tornado warnings and had some come fairly close, but never actually seen one or even a funnel cloud. And yay for you on getting in so much exercise while you were gone!! Unless I'm walking a lot, I never seem to manage that.

Today I rode about 4 1/2 miles. One of the roads angles and I can't get an exact mileage from the map, so I had to guess.

Boys are in two different places tonight. :( Last league game for Derek and I'll miss it. They have a chance to go 12-0. His coach won't be there either and had tried to get it rescheduled, and never heard back from the other coach. Nicholas' team is in contention for first place and really needs to win tonight. Including tonight he has 3 league games left. There are still a couple possible tournaments, but nothing definite. And potentially a few more games, just to have more games to play. Nicholas is playing in the wooden bat league which runs 6 weeks in the fall, so we'll pretty much have August off.

Back to cleaning.

Today was Disk 9 legs. I'm still really having trouble getting into my workouts. :( I get up, deal with the dog, check mail (which I normally never do before I workout) and putter around before finally going downstairs. My workouts are starting about 1/2 an hour later than they should and that puts everything behind. I need a big mental adjustment!

I did discover that there are limits to barefoot workouts. Paper plates. I'm finding it really hard to use them barefoot because I just slip off of them. I managed the standing stuff, but then in the bonus work there's the paper plate/glute work and I just couldn't keep my feet on the plates, so I had to stop and put my shoes on.

Hope you're all hanging in there.

Morning Warriors

Today was the first day of no school so I slept in a little and did my workout after breakfast... I really feel like I have lost a chunk of the day but I think I really needed the rest. My back and shoulders were a little DOMSy from the TGU's. I am not sure why they are bothering me more now than before but it was a good sore not an ouch sore.

WU: Dislocates, halo's, wall squats, pumps
WO: 3 rounds 45 sec work/ 15 sec rest
Alternating swings 27,28,27
Ninja Tuck Jump (assisted) 7,6,7
Push-ups 18, 20, 18
Snowboarder 35,30,35
Alternating explosive plank 10, 10 , 10

CO: 3 rounds 30work/10 rest
Clean Press 7/7, 6/6, 6/6
Pike press from chair, 12,11,9
One Legged Sit 10/10, 10/11, 10/11
Assisted pull-up, 7,7,8

So the Ninja Tuck Jump I can't do from the floor... I really think it is a mental block so I put my knees on the top of my high step and did it from there. Worked great! The other cool thing was I have noticed an improvement on my one legged squats on my right leg. Before when I was lowering down it was more like falling down, now I am lowering!!!

Cathy - I think that it is just that time of year for puttering! I know what you mean about the paper plates and barefoot. Just doesn't work well. Hope you have a great day.

Janis - Hope you are hanging in there!

Cheers to MJ and Tara

Heather

How much longer to see the specialist??? can't you bribe him with chocolate?

To bring some humour to your day... My youngest just drew a mangled Canada flag over my face with great globs of face paint. About half way through he said "ewww that's nasty" (he's 6) but continued. Now I have to walk around with this muck on my face, globs that I can see out of the corner of my eye until I can tell him it is getting too itchy!

I wish I could think of something that you could do to ply your time besides chocolate. But chocolate is chocolate and damn it's good stuff!

Hope your day gets better
Heather

Funny Heather, thanks. I think you made a tactical error, though, always always always have your face painted with Chocolate Rice Dream Pudding. Win-win.

My much anticipated prom date, er, my orthopedic appt is: July 7th. In other words, one week from today! Yay!

BTW - what is a ninja box jump?

:D

Janis I don't think you really want to know what a ninja box jump is. Just the name alone has me running in the opposite direction! :p

One week to go! Have you worked that out in minutes? seconds? Just how large is your chocolate stash anyway? After reading your post, I thought it a very good thing that my ability to find chocolate in this house is always minimal at best. I can't imagine how hard it is for you right now. :( At least with my calf, I could hobble around and I could sit and lay comfortably.

Heather there is NO way my kids are ever painting my face with anything! I may have...um...issues. Especially with goopy, globby things.

I rode this morning and I had all kinds of great intentions to go for the more hilly 6 1/2 miles (that's about as far as I can go mornings) and then as I coasted down the driveway and turned to head uphill, I realized that I had forgotten to consult my legs, specifically my quads, that had done STS Disk 9 yesterday! So, I turned up at the corner and did 4 miles instead. I still had an uphill ending, which normally isn't too bad, but today I was really talking my way through it.

Baseball tonight and then we are waiting to hear about a couple of rescheduled games. Definitely winding down.

Quick note. This morning was STS Disk 8 Back and Triceps. Boys are starting their four day job of cleaning the leaves out of the neighbors pool twice a day and Derek is very anxious to get over there.

Cathy

My chocolate stash isn't much of a stash. I wish. Hmmm. Maybe that will be today's goal - build a stash. According to my calculations I have 120 hours to go before my doctor appt. Feel free to break that down to minutes and seconds for me. :p

Speaking of math, let me get this straight - your boys are cleaning a neighbors pool 8x over 4 days?

Heather

Did you get the Canadian Flag washed off? Still wondering what a Ninja box jump is...

Hey Everyone

Yesterday was Canada day so I was on the road at 6 to the MIL's so it was a rest day and unfortunately too much food day!
Today's workout was
WU joint mobility
WO 13 min swings 10 rounds of 20 swings/16kg alternating jump rope and MCers
CO: Swing set workout - 60 walking lunges, 10 biceps, 10 swing pikes, 10 triceps, 10 elevated push-ups. for 3 rounds with 50 then 40 walking lunges. 18min (including time spent filling a bubble blower!)

My walking lunges went much better than last time so my knees must be getting better as my knees didn't hurt and I felt like my form was good throughout! The other bonus was that I did 20 swings for each round during swings!!! hurray. I am finally getting somewhere.

Cathy - That's alot of pool cleaning!!! Gotta love when your body reminds you that you are not doing what you had planned with pain!!! Good job on your ride. Running after STS leg days was like running in porridge!

Janis - Man, I hate to wish time away but I hope your days pass quickly! So frustrating... Okay a ninja tuck jump - you sit on the ground with your legs under your butt (I have to be up on my toes to do it) then you swing your arms back and then forward quickly and with one movement you whip your legs up and land in a low squat with your feet flat on the ground! This is a link to a Zuzana workout with them in it.
http://www.bodyrock.tv/2010/06/28/epic-sexy-abs-workout/ at minute 2:16. She shows how to do the ninja tuck jump.
I hope you can survive for 120 hours!!!!

Talk to you soon
Heather

The pool saga - see the neighbors have this lovely willow that does a great job of shading their pool on the backside, it also does a great job of dropping it's lovely willowy leaves in the pool. Which then can clog it all up, so it has to be skimmed a couple times a day.

Ninja tuck jumps definitely are not for my knees. It's doing stuff like that that messed them up in the first place. :( Kudos to all of you who can do them!

Hey Everyone

Have a great July 4th! Yesterday was a bit crazy I went for a run and when I got back my sister and her family were at my house and we spent the day with them and then off to my Dad's birthday party. I think I am done with parties now!!! BUT we are having people over this afternoon to hang out in the pool. It is so hot already. Today I am going to rest but yesterday I did my usual run but instead of doing it as a steady state I did the two hill intervals and then ran fast for 2 min and walked for 30 sec and repeated that until I reached the end. It was really starting to warm up and I was soaked by the time I got back.

I had better go as I am sweating just sitting here and I think there is a window open... and someone is spreading some ode to poop (chicken I believe!!!)

Cathy - Willows are lovely and cool but very messy... profitable for your boys though!

Janis - Hang in there!!!!

Happy Independence Day Warriors!
