Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/4

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Gym Style back, shoulders, biceps (50 min.).

Happy Easter, Deb! Hope your brunch goes well.

Wishing all pentagenarians a great spring! It's beautiful here today and I hope it stays this way. Tomorrow the semester begins again for me.

garance, cool, i wanted to ask someone what GS back, sh, bi's. i did GS ch & tri's today. it is the only GS i have and since the format is so simple, i thought if i knew what excercises are on the other GS's, i could just do my own version. i downloaded the ch & tri's w/the 30% discount , so i got it for $8. if i can get the others for that , i'll download them too. but, in the meantime, could you tell me the format of back, sh, bi's?
hope all had a blessed Easter Sunday!

Monday

Good Morning!

I hope everyone had a great Easter. Our brunch turned out well, everyone was gone by 1:00 pm, and DH and I had the house in fairly good shape by 2:00. Then it was nap time, I was exhausted. I did not sleep well last night, so I did not do a workout this morning. I still got up at 4:30, made coffee and am sitting here wishing I had taken the day off.

Garance, how did you like the Gym Style workout? It was a beautiful weekend here too, very warm on Saturday, not as warm yesterday but sunny and bright all day.

Cathy, here is what I found on the site: Send me (PM) your e-mail and I will send you the workout sheets that have all the sets etc,

Gym Style: Back, Shoulders and Biceps is approximately 62 minutes in length. You will work with a variety of rep patterns and always in a controlled manner. Most of the rep speeds are a 2/2 count or slower (and only faster when it suits the specific exercise). The rests between the exercises are moderate. You will love how the band exercises bring the muscle group to total exhaustion wherever included. Though viewing a list of exercises may appear standard, you will love the challenge this workout delivers. Here is the breakdown.

Hi to Josie, Joan and Valerie,

Take care

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Petra Kolber's Just Dance (50 min.).

Thanks, Deb, for posting the sets on Gym Style. I like this group of DVDs, although I continue to be substituting for the legs.

What did you serve for brunch? DH and I had our usual Easter ham with fingerling potatoes and a big salad. Our hams are scrumptious and we bake them in a very low oven with a honey and marsala wine marinade and the usual cloves.

Cathy, unless I'm getting barmy in my old age, the Gym Styles came with the Max series--Lowmax, Muscle Max, IMax 3, Core Max, Kick Max. I have just sold my IMax 3 and Core Max at Amazon and I am hoping to sell Kick Max there as well.

Still very nice spring weather here. I'm holding my breath, though, because it is not at all unusual to get a final wintry blast.

Hi to the rest of you pentagenarians!

thanks deb!! pm'ing you now. i am so tired today.am supposed to do advanced cardio blast. think i'll take a nap and then try. it is a hard workout. very similar to cathe's cardio, but only 30 m. part of your cardio is doing tall box climb, fast.
ttyl

garance, i have been trying to sell STS cardio, no luck, guess i should try amazon. how do you post something on amazon? i really want to get my money back on them.
well, i managed to eek out advanced cardio blast this afternoon, but it was hard. really tired today, and now i have a headache. tomorrow is a cardio & sculp(allie's aerobic body shaping) and rest on wed. the rotation i'm doing has us on a 6 straight days of workouts and then a day off. not sure if i can keep that up all month. may have to have 2 days off a week.

Tuesday

Good morning,

Today I did a Cardio Coach, 35 minute treadmill workout. It felt pretty good. It is raining here, but I guess we need a little rain so the grass will start growing.

Garance, for brunch we had a breakfast sausage cassarole, Potatoes O'Brien, pea meal bacon, sausage patties, croisants, strawberry cheese danish, fruit salad. The best thing is the infusion water, we did lemon lime, and strawberry mint. Always a hit. I would love to have a fresh ham.

Cathy, if you need 2 days off a week, take them. No sense pushing yourself to end up with an injury. I sell everything on Ebay, have not tried Craig's List or Amazon. Are you trying to sell them as a set or individually? Some people may want one or two of them, but may not be interested in the whole set.

Hi to Joan, Josie, and Valerie,

Take care. :)

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Style chest and tris (48 min.). Not sure I like this one. I found myself starting with Cathe's weights and then going down because of the length of the sets.

Cathy, it's really easy to sell at Amazon after you set up an account. You just find the listing for Cathe Friedrich Shock Cardio and there is a box to the right underneath the buying section where you can click on sell here. Then you are referred to a place where you describe the condition and set a price and they create a listing. I just sold two Kimberly Spreens last week and the week before a Charlene Prickett from ages ago that I barely used.

MMMM, Deb, that sounds like a very yummy brunch. It's raining here too, but tomorrow sounds balmy--going up to 80. Unbelievable. But I will be in all afternoon doing tutorials.

Where are the rest of you pentagenarians? Are you turning into slackers?

Slacker here, checking in! We had a big shopping day on saturday and didn't work out. visited aunt in assisted living, and other assorted duties. sunday we did an easy 7 mile hike. DH bought new boots saturday and wanted to try them on something not too steep or snowy. so we went fast and called it cardio. Kind of nice because the population was low, roads weren't busy, no one on the trail. I love to hike on holidays!

monday we did Yardmax. today I need to do something, undecided exactly what. we are out of food so need to fit in a a big grocery expedition.

Before I started STS, I loved the GS workouts. I think I'd still like them but will have to redo after STS and reassess. I haven't done GS since November. How can you tell what weight Cathe is using? I only occasionally get a glimpse of the number on a dumbbell and sometimes she'll say to 'grab 12's or whatever weight works for you" . I've never seen the barbell set she uses so I don't know what the plates weigh though I assumed the big ones are 10's.

In a cautionary tale, DH follows me on STS. I do a disk, record the weights I use, and he increases the weight some, does the same disk. well, he got cocky and doing lateral side raises, he used 20's. I used 8's, and am pushing.... I find the move difficult without straining my neck. so he got his neck so sore he couldn't turn his head for three days. It's so funny ( not really funny) because cathe cautions several times about the neck issue. maybe he'll listen to me next time.

I may toss this out on the STS forum eventually, but I'd like your opinions first.
I didn't do many of the 1 rep max tests because I was new to 80% + of the exercises and I thought it was dumb to push weight to the max the first time I did something. many of the first disks I repeated several times adjusting weight levels as I worked. then I had the big health issues and had to drop the program for 6+ months, and start over. I have been consistent in recording weights I used. when I repeat STS, which I will, should I try the 1 rep max procedure, or go with my personally recorded weights? what do you think?

Hump Day

Good Morning.

Today I did another Cardio Coach, #7, 35 minues, 263 calories. I am in a cardio mood for some reason, no weight workout appeals right now. Not sure why that is. It's usually the other way around.

Garance, I was actually surprised that I was using Cathe's weights in a recent workout I did, maybe Pyramids? cannot remember but I attribute it to STS. I am teetering on starting another round of maybe Meso 3, not sure if I am up to an hour workout though. I have been keeping them pretty short. I also have Chalene Xtreme workouts which are about 30 minutes, that is possibility.

Valerie, very easy to tell what weight Cathe is using by using the pre-made worksheets. I just sent them to Cathy, ( Drover) they show what weights Cathe is using. How is the Tower use going? As for 1 rep Max tests, I did most of them, all the upper body ones, but not all the lower. It was tedious that's for sure. You can almost use the testing as a workout in itself. I found that I could lift really heavy in some of them for the test, then when I got to the actual workout, there was no way I was lifting that heavy and had to back down. Afterwards, when I did Meso 2 again, I just used whatever my heaviest was in the first go around, if that makes any sense. I still saw a lot of improvement in how heavy I could go.

Joan, how are the tax filings going? are you almost done? LOL How is your Mom doing?

Josie, are you vacationing at a casino, winning money or really busy at work?

Cathy, are most of the workouts you are doing in this rotation from The Firm? I was very surprised to hear that Anna Bensen had passed away. Sometimes I think about pulling out the Firm Volume 1 but I am afraid to! It was so hard, I bet I would not be able to walk the next day.

Pretty warm here already and it's not even 5:30 am...love it!

Take care,

Deb, I must be overlooking something. the STS worksheets printed from workout mgr? they have cathe's weights on them? I don't use every feature of the program but I must be overlooking something. regardless, I did disk 31 yesterday and raised my weights in most moves, many by just adding weighted gloves.

The tower works very well. It is MUCH MUCH easier to load/unload barbell weight when it's on the tower. we put the threaded barbell with spacers to push the plates wide enough to rest on it. It's a 4 foot bar and wasn't wide enough. screwing on off is much easier. still not as fast as cathe but faster than on the floor. I feel more comfortable increasing weights when I don't need to flip wrists to get in position to raise the barbell. I can adjust weight while on the tower.
I can slide the weight bench under it or pull it out easily. It isn't hard to look up and make sure the barbell is back on the rests before letting go. I'm looking forward to using it for pullups/chinups when I repeat STS. I'm pretty amazed at how much more weight I can do than a couple weeks ago, and I'll credit the tower as a big part of it.

I lot of people have said what you did, that doing 1RM's didn't always translate well to a real workout where you're doing multiple exercises in sequence. I'm thinking strongly about working off my own records of what I've done. I don't go easy on myself and if I think I can safely increase weight, I do it.

weather here... well, now it's the winter we never had. cold rainy, windy, loads of snow in the mountains. bummer.

howdy all!! yesterday i did the firm's aerobic body shaping, and i did do advance cardio blast on monday. i am resting today, thank the Lord. i'm wore out. i am doing a rotation that is 6 straight days and then 1 day off. not sure if i'll make it for the entire month. i'll see. then, the kids came over yesterday and i logged 8 m. on my pedometer at the end of the day. i'm kinda tired today. :)

ok, i am gonna try ebay and amazon. i will sell them seperately, cuz i'm keeping HiiT and i did not get travel fit. thanks for your help.

traildoggie, when i did STS i did do the 1rm and i was really surprised at how heavy i could lift, especially in meso 3. if you are not gonna do it, i would try to go a bit heavier than you have recorded in m 2&3, just to see if you are going to lite. you can always drop you weight. i'm thinking about redoing my 1rm throughout the summer and maybe doing STS again next winter. i did it last summer and it bout killed me. it is just too hot here, even w/AC, it is just extremly exhausting when dealing w/the heat we have down here. hope that helps some.:)

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.). Fun and sweaty workout.

Valerie, on the Gym Style chest and tris Cathe just said what she was using on all the exercises. I started out with her, but by the time I got to the last set, I really had to go down. I am really feeling my tris today, so maybe I will stick with the GS for a couple more weeks. I never did the 1rm. I am too easily bored with such fitness regimens and figure, if it bores you, don't do it. I am going to get some bigger dumbbells when I go back to STS though, because the last time I did it, I don't feel like I really challenged myself as I should have on meso 3.

Deb, is it as beautiful where you are as it is here? It's currently 81 and sunny. Gor-ge-ous!

Any luck setting up an account at Amazon, Cathy?

Hi to Josie and Joan!

deb, yes, most are firms, but i am puttin in a few cathe's here and there, and a tracie too.

not yet , garance, i have to do it at my son's . i have dial-up and it would take forever. it took me forever just to post this am. the computer is being dumb. actually, my dil did the craig's list form me. she would probably do ebay and amazon , too. she is waaaaaay more computer savvy than i am. garance, isn't your name linda? don't know why i can't remember that, it is my sister's name.

Hi Ladies,

I'm no longer on vacation and as usual when you get back from vacation there is double the work piled up on your desk. I ended up getting a cold last week while the kids were here and did not workout at all other that running around with the kids I did go spinning yesterday and felt a bit tired. I hope I get my energy back for Saturday's 100 mile ride.

My son will be back from deployment next Wednesday, can't wait!

Valerie, did you get a change to look for the bike shorts on the web site that I suggested?

Deb, I did not go to a casino for vacation this time, but maybe soon. My anniversary is April 21st and we might go away for the weekend. This will be our 20th.

Hi Joan, Garance and Cathy!

The weather here is also beautiful, but they are saying that it will be cool this weekend.

I'm on Facebook now and have a few pictures posted of my last ride, if you PM me I can give you my full name so that you can see me.

Josie

Good morning all,

I did 4DS Kickbox only this morning, no weights. I cannot get a good calorie burn with this one because I modify to low impact and my heart rate never gets that high...oh well, at least I may get some core or other benefit from it. It rained all day yesterday and we even had a tremendous hail storm. It was pretty scary and loud. Then lightening around 7:00 pm...crazy day.

Valerie, I was referring to Cathe's older workouts, where someone put together all the workout sheets showing what weight Cathe is using for each exercise, Gym Styles etc. You are right, I don't think she announced her weights in STS, because they wanted us to use the 1RM system.

Cathy, 8 miles is a lot of steps!! my plan is to work 6 straight days too, then take one off, most weeks life gets in the way, something keeps me up or wakes me up around midnight, and I end up taking a rest day mid week. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will never do a workout in the evening after work, so if it is not done in the am, I am not getting one in that day.

Garance, see weather woes above...I have a couple of old fashioned weight sets, with bars etc that I am able to increase dumbbell weight pretty easily. I have a couple permanently set at 25 pounds, but only use them for one arm rows.

Josie, welcome back! Yeah, sometimes you have to wonder if taking a vacation is worth it when you come back to a ton of work. Do you have to join Facebook to see someone's pictures? If so, I will go look...would love to see the pics...I have never joined and really don't want to. Just a thing I have about it, in general..

Joan, stop by and let us know how you are doing...

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the 30 minute P-57 for legs and abs and then 2 fast miles with Leslie (26 min.).

Welcome back, Josie! Sorry, but I am not joining Facebook. It just seems like every day I hear a horror story about it. Now it's grandmothers who get phone calls from their grandchildren asking for emergency money. The grandchildren are on Facebook and predatory shysters figure out how to reach their grandparents from the info on Facebook. There is also the cyber bullying on Facebook over in South Hadley (about 40 miles from here) that led to a young girl hanging herself. Ugh!

Cathy, yep, I am Lynda with a 'y'. Hope you have luck with your DVDs. I have vowed never to do another Cathe presale. I like the 3 SC I have, but I opted out of the presale when the clips started appearing. Maybe if she promised to do a low impact series I would be tempted.

Well I am off to my annual physical this afternoon.

Deb, I intend to get some 25 and 30 lb. dumbbells. I can load my barbells pretty heavy, but I need some bigger dumbbells for meso 3.

Hi to Joan, still buried in tax stuff I'm sure.

Just did disk 29, another plyo legs. geez, they are killers. I modified by not going very heavy and lowering step height. but I did everything. there were a lot of exercises I've never seen/done before so had to pause and back up often. overall, I feel I did a reasonable job cause it's a tough one.
I have a high step. you need to pay close attention when jumping on/off and over it, there's no length to it, you can't "wander" even a little so if they do 4 risers, I do 3 etc. good enough. tripping over the step would be unpleasant.

Josie, sometimes you wonder about vacations... time off but all the work is there when you get back so you "pay" for taking the vacation that's owed you. I found some Canari gel boxer style underwear. I can wear them with any shorts or pants and they fit well. first pair I bought were mismarked in size, said medium but must have been smalls. I returned them and tried another pair, they were much better. Ialso got a pair of LLBean bike shorts ( $39) comfy though the chamois isn't as fancy as more expensive shorts. I tried some others on at REI and they were too low cut, I don't remember what brand. Mountain bike shorts need to be looser than street riding shorts and you don't sit on the seat the same, and definitely not for mileage like on a street bike. 100 miles is a lot of mileage. hope you have a good ride. Great news your son is coming home. Is he done with his tour?
Garance(lynda) good luck on the physical. I have mine the 19th with a new doc. hope I like her.
I have 20 & 25 lb dumbells and a pair of weighted gloves. after, I have dumbbell handles I can load with the same plates as the barbells use. It takes longer but those individual dumbbells get pricey as they get heavier and there's no flexibility. I put an old bathroom scale in the workout room and am weighing things. something I thought was 25 was 28. have no clue yet how much the barbell bars weigh.

Weather here is still unseasonably cool. we may even get snow today or tomorrow. Hard to imagine but it's way colder and nastier than it was in jan or feb. DH and I are thinking of doing a car camping/bicycle trip this weekend if (big if) the forecast improves. going to the snow doesn't seem appealing, there's so much in the last 7-10 days the avalanche risk will be very high.
