Looking 10-25 Years Younger – by Karen Kay

After

People usually guess my age at anywhere from 10 to 25 years younger than what I really am. While I’ll never admit to how old I really am — even if you guessed correctly, I would most definitely lie — I will say that I’m over 55 and exercise to Cathe daily. I think her workouts help me to stay younger looking.

When I began working out with Cathe, I didn’t really want to build muscle, I just wanted to keep what muscle I had. Since we lose muscle as we grow older and gain fat, it was important to me to try to maintain my shape, endurance and my low fat ratio .

I love Cathe’s workouts not only because they’re fun and often she makes me smile, but because I love them so much, that exercising doesn’t seem as strenuous as it really is. The new Hiit workouts are wonderful for me because I’m always looking for anaerobic workouts, since these kinds of workouts tend to stimulate that hormone in the body that keeps us looking young. This has been important to me, too. And I love the new step and cardio core workouts. Core is one part of my workouts that I could definitely do more often.

What I didn’t count on with Cathe workouts was how my body began to shape up with the strength videos. No more wiggly arms and fatty deposits in places where I didn’t want them.

Just a few days ago, I received a wolf whistle while walking down the street. Did I turn to the young man and say “I’m old enough to be your mother?” Not on your life! I just smiled and walked on.
Thanks Cathe for all the careful thought you put into your workouts. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I appreciate your dediction and hard work.

  • I’m 54 years old and trying to decide what to do to get back in shape. I’ve put on weight since turning 45 and yes, losing mucsle getting fatty deposits, ect. Yikes! Even on my stomach! So thanks to your story I’ think I’m going to try what your doing. What do think I should start with? I’m 5’4″ weight 152.. . so you say anaerobic? You look great! Thanks for your story.

  • I’m an old broad at 52. Glad to see a story where someone over 50 is using Cathe DVD’s. I’m using Drill Max and Basic Step to lose some weight ( about 15 pounds – I’m 5’2″ and 135 lbs ). Maybe when I get down to my lower weight, I’ll write a success story as well.

  • I love to hear about other “old” women that work-out to Cathe’s dvd’s. I, too, love working out to them. I have a bit of a variety but LOVE to do several of Cathe’s kick-box work-outs. They seem to be really helping in that old abdominal area that seems to thicken with age!

  • I just got the Butts and Gutts DVD for Christmas and love it. I use dumbells in place of the barbell and it works just fine. I, too, am over 50 and no one can believe it. I’ve been working out since I was 20 and it pays off. I alternate between the Cathe workouts with Gilad and like them both. thanks for making it easy to workout.

  • I just heard Suze Orman tell a 62yo woman to get back out in the work force to earn money coz she was still ‘in her prime’ and cannot use age as an excuse to not get a job at 62.

I agree and although these posts may be joking about being old in the fifties, I really hate to see it looked at that way…and I’m not nearly 50. It just seems to me to zap vitality and vigor to call yourself old before at least in the 70’s. Too many of my neighbors out walk me and they’re in their 80’s! Many others are in their 90’s and function just fine, maintaining their yards, etc.

I respect other views, just throwing in mine that it’s likely unhealthy to label 50’s as old because there’s a potential to live 40 more years! That means you’re only just past the halfway point of your life and when you’re in your 70’s or 80’s, you’ll believe you were young in your 50’s. Just saying you should still believe it now and get going like Karen! 🙂 The mind is so powerful, you’re just starting what I think will be the less stressful, greatest time of all. Thanks for lettin’ me ramble, blessings.

  • Thanks Amy! I thought I’d respond to your wonderful comments.

Hi Teresa! There’s a book called Ready, Set, Go! by Phil Campbell that explains the three different muscle fibers and why the anaerobics (getting the heart rate up, then down, then up, then down) helps to keep you looking younger. It has to do with that HGH hormone and stimulating it naturally. I am older than you are. Geez, I can’t believe I’m even saying that. But I am older than you are. Gosh, I just hate to admit to how old I am. Let’s say this picture was taken about 2 years ago, when I was still a bit older than you are. Sigh…

Hi Kathy! I, too, love drill max. It is really an anaerobics workout (the cardio part) in my opinion. So is 4DS — Bootcamp (cardio only) as are the IMAX’s and the Hiit’s. I can’t say enough about these workouts. And Cathe makes them so much fun. I’ve even managed lately to get my husband to work out to some of them.

Becky, when I saw that MMA boxing video, I thought — what me? At my age. Oh, my gosh, I love that workout. Again, my hat is off to Cathe.

And I so agree with the last poster, too! We have grandfather living with us (he’s not really my grandfather but in American Indian tradition, one always calls their elders, grandfather) and he is 89, and still going strong. : )

  • Hi Shelly!

Somehow I missed your email. I’m so glad to see there’s someone else out there exercising away despite our age. I bet you look terrific.

I’ve not been exercising since I was 20 — I started in my mid-30’s, but found Cathe about 5-6 years ago, and I’ve never looked back.

I love your story, too. 🙂
