It’s Time to Spring Clean Our Fitness Routines!

Our bodies are truly remarkable! Every day, without any conscious thought on our parts, our bodies are working minute by minute to enable us to move, breathe, digest, not to mention regulating our heartbeats, fighting off germs and disease, and healing wounds. The list of activities being handled by our bodies at all times is a very long one, and believe it or not, functional training is on that list.

Each day as we go through our routines, whatever they may be, we are sitting, standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, twisting. Doing these movements in many different directions assists in keeping us mobile, flexible, and able to perform all the daily tasks on our lists. You may ask yourself, if we are training functionally every day already, why should we also add functional training workouts into our routines?

The goal of functional training workouts is to take the movements that we must be able to perform to stay independent and enhance or improve our ability to perform them. Let’s think about it in relation to a trip to the grocery store. You arrive and grab a cart. It’s light and easy to push. With each item you add to the cart, the weight increases and so does the amount of power that you have to put out to keep pushing it. After you finish adding everything, the cart is even heavier. You need more core strength each time you must turn and maneuver the new weight load.

While in the store, you also reach for things on high shelves. Maybe even stand on your tip toes to reach. This requires balance. You must bend down to get things on low shelves, which requires flexibility. You must twist through your core and spine as you remove items from the cart at checkout. This requires mobility. You may even have to lift some pretty heavy objects like cases of water or pet food, which requires some extra muscle.

Although our bodies have learned all these movements in our regular lives, it’s our functional training workouts that help us perform these tasks easier and with much less risk of injury. Our muscles can handle more weight, we have better core stabilization, we’re more balanced and flexible, all because we have been specifically training these aspects of functional movement. If we want our daily tasks to feel like a breeze, then we need to keep our bodies primed and ready. Functional training is a game-changer!
