Where to buy tuna?

It's been a while since I bought tuna. What kind of tuna do I need to look for and where should I buy it that's safe for health purposes? I know that most of the stuff sold in grocery stores should not be eaten in quantity. Or is it okay as long as it's the dark tuna? I usually get from vitalchoice.com but the prices are so high and they don't sell tuna in water.

Thanks,
Nancy

Never mind. I did a little research and found that it's okay to buy light tuna instead of white. So I just saved a fortune by buying Bumble Bee @ 99 cents per can! I'm set.

Thank goodness for that!! I had been confused- we buy tons of it at Costco, but we don't eat it very much so I'm not too concerned about mercury or anything at this point. I don't like tuna anyway, just eat it because fish/tuna is good for me.

i am not to picky on fish as long as its fish LOL. i buy tuna in a pouch when its on sale or in a can.when you live in the middle of a large state about 5 hours away from fresh water, you are sure not going ot get quality or cheap seafood.

apparently everything in the world is bad for you so i just go with whatever as long as its not full of sugar and "bad" carbs. i try not to go the splenda route either although i do indulge in carb control yogurt b/c it does have a lots of protien. never more then one cup every other day. but that is a personal preference.

How much is one can? Isn't that like 3-6 oz? I don't think I could eat more than that anyway- like I said, I really don't like it! Love that there is an excuse not to eat more, though... :D

ETA: just checked what I've got- I have 6 oz cans of chunk light tuna in water, and I also have little frozen shrimp and frozen salmon. It looks like I'm okay then, per that article. (I wouldn't know a Tilefish if it bit me...) And I'd never eat something from local waters since that would be SF bay, and those things growing in those waters are mutants!!

yes a regular size can is 6oz but i know some stores carry smaller size cans. i like that option too. i love tuna espeically mixed up with some dark greens with a little balsamic vinagrette. mmmmm

Amy, LOL! They'd have to put that stuff in a can with skull and crossbones. And it would probably glow in the dark.

Unfortunately for me, I could eat tuna every day of my life and never get tired of it. I just love it. Now I'm limited to 12 ozs. per week, or less if I eat salmon. Which I eat many times each week. x( Pretty soon I'm going to be glowing in the dark.

I thought the limits posted really only applied to pregnant women... is there something you aren't telling us?! ;)

Seriously, though, I know all should limit the intake (WHAT is that microwave DOING?!?! cracking me up!!!! and all should try microwaving a marshmallow if you want to see that in real life...) but I'm not sure by how much if you aren't pregnant or planning for kids.

It really doesn't matter to me, though, since I'm never going to seek a fish out to eat it. shudder. You should see all the photos my parents have of me as a kid, having to hold the fish I caught. my face is about as scrunched up as it could get!! LOL I love what a little sh*t I was. }(

What I want to know is why there isn't a warning on cans of tuna if its so dangerous? Geez, you can't eat anything now a days and feel good about it.

that's why i just give up and do my own thing. seems to be working so i can't really complain. i haven't gotten sick in a long time(beside the house i lived in with the mold, but that explains itself)and checkups seem to be okay so i am just going to roll with that. like i said you can't do anything without it being bad for you so i just gave up on the hype.

I buy imported Italian canned tuna packed in oil. Once you've tried it you can't go back to that crap packed in water. I'm such a rebel!

Michele, the Italian tuna in oil sounds absolutely yummy! What's the name and can I buy it online?:). I haven't eaten my "pound of dirt" yet (as my dear departed mother used to say) so I hope I won't be dying from mercury poisoning anytime soon ;-) . If I do, I will die happy and gastronomically satisfied.... so bring on the seafood! Rebel II.

Robin,

I buy whatever they have at my local grocer or the italian deli.

I've used this brand before and it's delicious:

I've also used a brand called Callipo which is very good. I look for tuna packed in olive oil, and of course, I drain it before using it. If you want to make tuna salad you can reduce the amount of fats like mayo when using oil packed varieties.

I haven't tried this one but it's supposed to be delicious:

ETA I've heard that the Spanish canned tuna in oil is also superb but I haven't tried it yet.

ETA yet again (I'm going crazy now with the tuna). Here's a link to a great article on canned Mediterranean tuna.
