Taking the Plunge!!

Hi everyone..

Just wanted to eek out some of my excitement that I finally made an appt for a underwater body fat testing!! Have not had my body fat tested in years that way and am curious. I REALLY wanted to go out to NAU where they offer some fitness package testing where they will hook you up to monitors and stuff to determine your VO2 max and your lactate threshold (ooh, how fun!)as well as your bodyfat, but I could not get a hold of them and I am sure that would be VERY pricy. Not to mention I don't know what I would do with that info!!LOL!!

I have been working out with Cathe and heavy weights for over a year now and I am really psyched not so much to see body fat loss but to see lean weight gain. I am really hoping my body fat is under 22%. Many years ago I tested at 12%, but that was when I had nothing to do but workout and I was for sure muscularly wasted. Too much cardio.

So, my appt is Nov. 9, so I gotta eat really clean until then. Anyone done the underwater weighing?? If so, were you pleasantly suprised or horrified??? I would like for someone to share an experience...

Thanks!!

Janice

Oh Janice that is too cool and I'm jealous, and extremely curious to your results, now your gonna have to share them!!!! I live in the sticks, but you've made me curious to check where they might do this. I've been lifting for about 1 1/2 years now and would love to know this. I was wanting to get one of those calipers you were talking about and what I would like to know is when you get the underwater results please compare them to your calipers and let us know how accurate the calipers appear to be. Thanks. Isn't that great motivation to eat clean, it's worth it just for that eh!!!

Hi Janice. I told my husband that I wanted to have that test, and my husband told me that he can get my bodyfat percent. He measured my wrists, forearm, neck, calves, and hips, and entered it to a software he has and, according to that, my bodyfat percent is 26 :(. I asked him if that is precise and he swears it is. That is what they use in the Army, according to him. Do you know if this it is true that that test is precise or how does it compare to an underwater testing?

I have done the calipers before, and they are pretty accurate. However, underwater body fat testing is considered the "gold standard" of body fat tests. I would not do this very frequently, just for fun every now and then. I have not done it in 10 years so it sounded neat. You get a whole printed report that really is nothing more than simple calculations with your results, but it does tell you your lean wt and estimated BMR and all that jazz.

I REALLY want to know if someone has done this!! No one here???? Mariela, what your hubby says is probably pretty true, but I know if you are either very fit or very unfit you can get skewed results. Most definitly, I always get higher body fat percentages with calipers. For instance, when you try to get a "skinfold" on my thigh it really feels like you are also grabbing lean tissue. That is possible. I just thought the H2O testing would be more precise...
