Strength training & No cardio

Rhonda

Has anyone tried doing this, just weight training with no cardio? I was thinking about doing a weight training w/yoga in the evening rotation w/ minimal to no cardio.

Wondering if I can get results with this plan or since I need to lose fat if I should keep some cardio in.

Any comments/suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks
Rhonda

This is a good question and I would like to hear others comments. I'm on my third week of a Slow & Heavy rotation with very little cardio and so far I have lost 1/2" in my hips and 1/4" in my waist. So far I've really only been doing one 30 minute pure cardio workout per week. On a separate day I'm doing Firm Lower Body Sculpt 1 which has 3 sets of leg presses and a bit of cardio included also. I'm using heavier weights for all the leg work than I normally do and this seems to be working. I ordered a Joyce Vedral DVD on Saturday and will start a rotation with her next week that will include mostly weights. I'm really enjoying it. I even took two rest days last week instead of one and have still noticed an improvement. One thing, though, since doing the Slow & Heavy rotation, I have found that I need to eat more. I get really hungry. I'm hoping that by the time I'm finished with the Joyce Vedral rotation, that we'll have Cathe's new vids and then I'm going to do a Pyramid rotation.

Hi Rhonda ..

I think for 'fat loss', you really need to perform both cardio and strength training. Yes, strength training will build muscle, but I wouldn't recommend neglecting the most important muscle in your body .. your heart. When it comes to losing weight, it's all about creating a 'calorie deficit'. Cardio is a great calorie burner, while strength carries the 'afterburn' effect of expending additional calories.

That said, you really have to do what works for you. You could always experiment for a couple of weeks and see what kind of results you get, and then tweak your program from there.

Just my .02 :)

This is really good news, but the problem with me is that while I love weight training I am afraid of not running fast enough. I joined a running club and I found out that I am the slowest runner there. I am in a dilemma now, do I keep up the running and try and improve on my speed or do I do what you are doing and see if I lose inches instead?

I don't have the slow and heavy, it looks like a good investment.

Running is fantastic cardio so I say keep with it. The weight training is important and I say at least 1-2 full body weight workouts per week minimum. Running burns a lot of calories and is very beneficial for the heart. You'll also enjoy the friends you make in a running group. Plus running puts a smile on your face, gives the brain chemicals a real booster ;-)

You say that, but you have not seen me run: I huff, I puff and I look like death on legs. I am finding that I can run a bit longer now and recover quicker, but that smile is not there yet (I wonder if it will ever get there!).

I haven't really lost inches either, which is why I am tempted to go weights only.
