Splenda Sugar Substitute

I agree. My husband keeps arguing with me that it's made from sugar and how bad could it be? and I say, so's that engineered fat molecule Olestra (the stuff that causes 'quickening of the GI tract' when you eat a significant amount of it).

I don't trust any engineered molecules, no matter how close to the real thing they may be, because we just don't know what their effects are going to be down the line. To put things in persective, we're still working on a cure for diabetes; and new insulin drugs are hitting the market every 6 months that do a better job of controlling insulin levels. But there is so much science doesn't know yet.

I'm no purist. I drink a can of diet coke every day, and there are a bunch of nasty little chemicals in there including aspartame. But I'm trying to quit--some days I make it without a can.

Agreed. It's too bad that 5 lbs of sugar can be had for about $3, but 5 lbs of apples sets you back $6.

I've never had a problem with Splenda but I don't consume it in excess either. I just use it in a cup or two of tea a day. I'm not militant about things such as artifical sweeteners. I more concerned about drunk drivers, illiteracy, and the lack of universal healthcare than I am about the occasional consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Also, as a librarian I caution you about "googling" for information without noting sources of the information. A quick google search brings up a lot of crap information, much of it unfounded and published by questionable sources. If you are really interested in learning more contact your local librarian who can direct you to credible sources and consider speaking to your physician who can address the nausea issue. Remember, just because it's on the web doesn't mean it's true!

Glad to hear it! You would be amazed how many don't. I find myself reminding PhDs to check their sources! This is what we call in the business "information illiteracy" :)

Yes, one of my fave phrases is "but I read it on the internet".

The internet - the world's biggest source of misinformation and porn;)

I get a nauseous feeling and a headache when I have Splenda or any other sugar substitute. I try to stay away from it, but it's in so many things.

I don't get any side effects, but I did get side effects when I stopped eating all the real sugar I use to consume...headaches, dizziness, irritability (just to name a few). I have to have a substitute if I don't have the real deal or I will go nuts, but I don't consume in large amounts as I mostly drink water anyhow. Gosh, I eat plain stuff as it is, can't imagine a world without sweetness at all....welcome to hell then. }(

I use Splenda too and have not had any problems with it. I eat two packets in my Oatmeal and another 2 packets in my yogurt, but that's it. I agree with you Charlotte, I have to have some kind of substitute or I'd go nuts. It's bad enough that I don't use salt anymore. I need some flavor.:7

I'm with you. I exercise so I can eat and enjoy food. I've cut out sugar in all of my beverages so I can have a cookie here and there or some ice cream on occasion but I do require my English breakfast tea have a bit of cream (the fat free stuff) and sweet (splenda).

I always use Equal in my tea, and sometimes in my oatmeal. I have never had a problem, but I've never used Splenda. For me, a sweet cup of tea can help me ward off the cookie cravings!
Good luck!

Splenda's closest chemical make-up is that of a pesticide. I wouldn't put a chemical sweetner in my mouth -- any chemical sweetner, if you paid me to. There is only one sweetner that I know of that is not a chemical, is completely natural, has no side effects, doesn't have any calories and doesn't affect the blood sugar and that's stevia. It's an herb and has been used for thousands of years in So. America as a sweetner and has been in use in Japan extensively for about 10 years. There's not been any instances of a complaint or any side effects noted in all this time in any of the research that I've done on it.

It takes some getting used to if you are going to bake with it, but there are cookbooks out there that can help you figure it out.

My 2 cents.:)

I don't go near that stuff either. I hate the aftertaste of it. A friend of mine who is a scientist said splenda is safe but I don't believe her. I use stevia most of the time as well as raw organic cane sugar (turbinado)

Fitnessfreak366 and Shelley, did you guys know that the Instone pudding and Vitamin Shoppe pudding has sucralose in it and aspartame? And Designer Whey has sucralose in it? Sucralose is same as splenda pretty much.

Lisa

Wow! I use splenda all the time. What do any of you use, in coffee? i usually put dry creamer and splenda. any sugg. i don't really care for reg. sugar.

Lisa - I did know about the sucrolose in Instone, I've stopped eating it because of that. It had a horrible after taste so I knew it had something like splenda in it. Plus I was getting some really bad headaches.

I tried the Instone pudding myself and it was AWFUL! I did not like the aftertaste either. The pudding reminds me of the Gerber's baby food pudding, the Vanilla Custard one. Speaking of pudding, do any one of you guys know which pudding is good and not high in sugar or has sucralose/aspartame in it?

Kathryn, if you're reading this, you're a big time enabler! Ever since you mentioned the chocolate tea, I've beend drinking it. I can't find the cookie one. Where'd you get it? Everytime I read your posts about food, I almost immediately purchase them. Shame, shame.... :p
