Running races for fundraising causes?????

I have just recently looked into running a marathon and doing the fundraiser for the Blood Cancer fund.....

You are required to raise $1000 to enter and get the training program and participate in the group runs.....

My question is/?? The task of running 26 miles does not scare me, but raising the money does. I just moved to this city and the only people I would be able to ask is family - I feel like family gets bombarded so much already?? Is that the wrong mindset??

Any pointers/tips/suggestions from people who have done this is appreciated. Thanks!

I raised money for the Luekemia and Lymphoma Society a while back. I think the amount was $2400. I sent out letters with self addressed stamped envelopes to friends and family explaining what I was doing and asking for donations. I also got a list of names and addresses of the houses and owners in my vicinity. For those, I had a picture taken of myself and since I run these streets all the time, the thinking was that some might recognize me. So I inlcuded the picture along with a letter telling them what I was doing to raise money. I was amazed at the complete strangers who sent me donations. In the end I think I had to throw in $600 of my own money to meet the pledge. It did seem daunting but it was worthwhile. Asking people for donations for cancer research is easy for me to do so I personally would not hesitate to ask friends and family. Good luck.
