Really Dumb Question

I'm sitting here on my couch in CA and the rain is coming down as it has for the past few hours. When I was going to sleep this morning, I wondered if you can hear snow like you can hear rain?? I thought probably not, but I'm curious what it sounds like.

I've been in a snow storm-ish thing while I was skiing a long time ago, so I know it's cold... :p but that's about all I know!! DH and I are going to the mountains next weekend (after exams) and our down parkas came in the mail yesterday.

But my main question is, when you're inside your house and it's snowing outside, what do you hear?

Such a dumb question for all you brave souls living east of me, I know...

I don't hear a thing if it's snowing. That's one of my favorite parts about snow - you wake up in the morning and everything is blanketed with a fresh covering of snow. It's so beautiful!

Freezing rain/sleet you can definitely hear, though!

That is not a dumb question Amy! It snowed here last night and we never heard a sound. :) When the boys got up this morning they were thrilled to see snow and couldn't wait to get out in it. They had no idea it had even snowed last night.

Dear Lord I don't understand how you all can deal with something called "freezing rain/sleet"... it sounds supremely miserable. And cold. And difficult to function in.

The most we've ever seen was hail. And not even that every year!

Snow is not the same as freezing rain or sleet. It's magical! At least until it starts to melt then turns all brown and slushy--then it's ugly--LOL!

I look at it like this - rain amplifies every little noise. Snow muffles everything. Traffic noise, everything. It's truly wonderful to go for a walk with it falling around you and everything is quiet and peaceful.:)

Maybe cats and dogs can hear the snow, but most times, a person can't (unless maybe you're outside in a very quiet location, and you really concentrate?). You CAN however, hear the wind during a snow storm. And sometimes, when the snow is really wet--the kind that melts when it hits the pavement--you can hear it drop against the window, a bit lighter than a raindrop.

I didn't even know it had showed today until I went out to put some mail in my mailbox.

Yes, snow muffles all the outside sounds....during or just after a heavy snow is a wonderfully peaceful time to go out and walk.....it's quiet and beautiful.
I am a SUMMER person, I hate the cold, but I do admit to loving snow now and then, as long as I don't have to drive on icy roads!!!!
;-)

I love to walk after a good snow fall. It makes this wonderful sound, like a soft crunch. I really love it!

You guys make it sound really NICE!!!! So cars on the streets don't make the slurpy noises like they do in the rain?

I'm now a California girl, but I grew up on the East Coast. No, the snow really makes no sound, but you can feel it. It's weird, and maybe it's because I was so tuned into it (heck, get enough snow, you don't have to go to school!!!!) that I could always feel when it was snowing, without even looking outside.

If there is one thing I miss about living in the Bay Area is the waking up to a world transformed. The first real snow fall of the season when everything is silent and white. I still get that warm fuzzy feeling when I see it on tv. Oh yeah, we go to Tahoe (family loves to ski), but it's different in the mountains than when it's at your own home.

And yeah, the people around here can't drive in the rain. I couldn't imagine what would happened if it snowed here!!

The cars make a big crashing sound when they slide on the ice into things like trees and other cars.

I live in SoCal now, but I grew up in the NW. What I can say is that while you do not technically hear the snow, you hear the effects. Everything is kinda muffled and there is a special kind of quietness. The light is also very different. When you wake up in the AM and it snowed overnight, you can tell it snowed because the light kind of glows. It is very magical and special. I just love the snow.

You guys are actually making me want snow, that is sickx(
I grew up in a very rural area of NY and yes, if you're outside and just close your eyes and listen deeply you can hear the snow falling around you. It's soft and quiet, you can hear it even better if you are laying down and the snow is falling on your face at the same time as it hits the ground around you. Imagine feathers falling on piece of paper. I consider this the world's most peaceful sound, as it is necessary to have almost absolute silence around you, it becomes just your breathe and the snow. In my opinion Robert Frost described it best in the his most famous and over-quoted poem: "The only other sound's the sweep/Of easy wind and downy flake."

Christine I keep forgetting you're in San Jose! I was there yesterday for a bankruptcy court training session. Have you ever been to Christmas in the Park?

In CA, everyone just tries to mimic snow with cotton or other stuff. I don't think they're coming even close!!

I hope it's snowy when we get up the mountains next weekend! It sounds like so much fun!! We'll have to get chains for my civic, though.

OOh that's my other question. for a rear-wheel drive do you get 4 chains or 2? I can't remember what my dad said.

If you live in snow, why would they even seel 2-wheel drive??

Amy - I used to work downtown on 1st and San Fernando, and would walk around Christmas in the Park over lunch. Took the kids there when they were younger (they're teenagers now and much too "cool" for stuff like that).

Oh you're heading to Tahoe next weekend! I'm sooo jealous! I love it up there! My friends who always rent a house for the season are not this year, so the free weekends are gone (well, free when you don't count the food, the lift tickets, the ski rentals...) I have a 4 wheel drive, so I am not sure how many chains you need for a rear wheel drive. If you ask a Pep Boys or Sears, they'll let you know and they'll be cheaper than getting them on the road (which I'm sure you know!).

We're actually headed to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP. It'll take us about 4 hours in good weather, so we're just going to Fresno on Saturday and will head up the hill Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon they have a Christmas Tree ceremony up there. I can't wait!!!!

I've got to remind DH to do that about the chains... }( :7 I love being a girl sometimes!

That's right! I had forgotten. Yeah - it's nice being a girl. My DH gets to worry about all that too... I just have to worry about packing. }(

Have a blast! It's so pretty up there! I hope you get to hear the snow fall!!!
