Music and Motivation

ChelePA

Cathlete
I have said it before but without the right music I have trouble staying motivated and focused. I love the music in X10, PRS 2, Rockout Knockout, Step Greatest Hits, Imax series or anything similar. I only take certain cycling classes based on the music. I have been thinking of signing up for the live classes but I am not really liking the music..but I love the video clips of the classes. Anyone else in this boat?

I find I like the music in her live classes. There are probably only 2 times I can say that the song playing was not motivating. I don't listen to the lyrics, I like stuff with more of a beat or rhythm depending on what I'm doing. Some of the music is in her dvds now and some are not. I love having live, I find I am doing more live workouts than dvds anymore. You can always cancel if you don't like it. Best of luck.

Hi ChelePA,

I've read in other posts that Cathletes, who aren't fond of Cathe's music selection, put their own music selection louder and workout to that.
Also some Cathe DVDs have the option to turn the music off.

Finally, and I hope I don't sound too harsh, but when you focus so much on the music, you are not focusing on the muscle group that you're working on as hard as you should be. If there is a song selection that doesn't appeal to me, I'm more focused on working harder on that body part than anything else. The music becomes a distant murmur, secondary, to everything else at that moment.

Yes, motivation is important, 100%, but you are limiting yourself when you opt to take certain classes based on music. Let yourself go, have fun, focus on form and enjoy putting your health in the forefront! Stay focused and committed!

I agree, when I'm focusing on working my muscles, music just becomes background "noise." Lately I have been using paper workouts. So I have the option of using my own music, or no music. More often than not, I go with no music. I find that I work harder, when I am in my head with my own thoughts, and concentrating on what I'm doing.

I am the same....with the music being in the background when I'm doing weights. I am committed to proper form and listening to the instructor. Heaven forbid I miss a cue and keep lunging while holding heavy weights! BUT.....when it comes to cardio it really can make a difference. Don't get me wrong, I'll push myself to do my best no matter what. But if the music is right....it helps somehow. I think it's IMAX 2 towards the end when I feel like I might spontaneously combust, the music seems to give me just the right amount of oomph to get thru it.....THEN burst into flames!!

Agreed 100%! Love, love, love the music to Imax 2. My fave of all time.

Still, I get where ChelePA is coming from. Half of the time, when I'm doing weights, I am doing a paper workout, and it's my time to listen to PINK in concert and I can rock out with her. With Pink belting out her tunes, I can squat and lunge and bench press for hours, singing along in between snatches of breath, and I feel no pain! I am completely focussed and push hard. Music matters to me too.

On the question of Cathe Live, I think it will be a completely different experience however. There's a sense of infectious energy that comes from a live class, and from having Cathe move around and work close to a class member shouting encouragement that I like from watching clips. I'd subscribe to this service for this atmosphere. Sometimes I dread heading down to my basement, all alone, to work out, all on my own. Sniff, sniff! Might be nice to have (the illusion of) company once in a while.

Clare - same taste in music! Squatting to Pink is awesome.
Sometimes I need to start my w/o with no music, and then once I've woken up a bit, I feel like something to help me along. I ALWAYS need music for cardio, however (YES to Imax 2 and to Hard Strikes). I find the music on a dvd is more important once I'm familiar with that workout - so with Cathe Live, I'm way too busy figuring out what to do next to really pay much attention to the music!

Music with cardio is a must. I also love the music in Imax2. Really gets me going.

Sorry ChelePA, the workouts you mentioned are all cardio including step and/or boxing and the music does make a difference.
Don't know if the "Vocals only" option is available on any of those DVDs.

I love the music on those dvds. Wish it was similar for the live classes.

Justine and Clare. I have three Pink CD's "Mussundaztood," "Can't Take Me Home," and "Try This." I need to know what Pink you both use to workout. I love her music. Just never thought to use it while lifting.

Karen - I use my favourite of her songs, most of which are on her greatest hits, but I've made a playlist (called P!NK dumbells) where I've mixed the songs with other female artists (everything from Dixie Chicks to Annie Lennox via Debbie Harry and Alanis Morisette). Do you use Spotify? It's on there.
