low weight high reps.??

I was recently talking to a woman that is in phenominal shape, when I asked what she does to keep in such great shape she said she runs 2 ml. 3days a week and does weight training using low weights high reps. she only uses 3 and 5 lb weights and has been doing so for 20 yrs. For her weight work she works out to a show on t.v with a woman named Marilyn, I was wondering if anyone has heard of her as I did not get the name of the program, I know this is vague but any info would be helpful. Thans :) Suzanne

Her program works for her, but certainly would not work for most. Personally. I would be concerned for the state of her bones: she'ss not lifting heavy eenough to stimulate bone mass increase, and as she ages, this would be an important consideration. Of course her running is impact work, so that helps some. But then 2 miles 'aint that much really.

I would get so bored doing endless reps with 5 pound weights to fatigue the muscles! The only muscle that would be fatigued by this is tricpes and rear delts!

Never heard of the program, sorry, but don't you think this flies in the face of all the research that states that: heavy weights build muscle mass, increase metabolic rate, burn more caloires, help with fat loss? Her program would not be for me.

I'd guess this is Margaret Richards. Her Body Electric TV show comes on at 5A on the East Coast each AM. It is all low/no weights high reps. ~Sharon

Maybe she's just genetically programmed to look good. I read that Loni Anderson ate like a pig and never worked out, but to this day she's still in fantastic shape and she's got to be in her 60's.

I've tried working out both ways and for my body type low weight, high reps is a lot more effective. I get much better results.

I think it really depends on your body type. I've always had plenty of muscle all over so it doesn't help matters when I lift heavy. I don't get the results I want this way. I'll work out sometimes with heavier weights but not a regular basis. For my regular routine I prefer light weights, high reps.

Thank you for all of your replies.
I found out the womans name is Margaret Richards, she has been around for some time. I agree that heavy weight work should also be done, perhaps added into a rotation that uses low weight high reps. I am going to give this routine a try. As I said before this friend of mine has wonderful muscle definition and very lean. She said lifting low weight high reps. has helped her lean out far more than heavy lifting ever did. Have a wonderful day.
