I remember reading about you gaining wt all of a sudden and not being able to lose it. Well I have been in the same boat for the past two yrs now. It seems since hitting 38 yrs old two yrs ago I cant lose this wt. I am now 40yrs old and feel as tho there is no hope. I have increased my exercising the past 3 weeks, added lots more wts and still nothing. I feel awful and pudgy. I dont want to feel like this or look like this. I mean I am not obese by any means but I have a comfortable wt that I like to be at and its not unrealistic either. I am 5 2 1/2 and have been fluctuating between 130-134.5 mostly toward the higher end. I felt comfortable at 125lbs not too low of a wt. I dont understand this and am frustrated. I was wondering if you broke thru your wt gain and what you did to do so. I have been cutting back on food and eating 6 meals, trying to eat low fat and get added protein since I am wt training. I was only lifting one day a week and now I am following chalene extreme and have no results yet. I am also doing the cardio she has me doing plus adding extra cardio so I am exercising two times a day sometimes and at least 6 x a week ,where before I never worked out more than 5days a week and never doubles. A girl I work with did doubles, meaning running in the a.m and p.m. and lost wt by doing this. She now runs 6 miles in the morning and then goes to abootcamp class right after her runs. The class ishour long and she is continuing to losewt. she is almost 39yrs old. So I dont know why I cant lose wt. should I do a detox? someone suggested that to me. your advice would be appreciated. thanks

I'm all for a detox personally. I'm recommending Colonix by Dr.Natura. It is sold online and not in stores. I love this stuff.
Have you tried eating a very low carb meal for dinner or as the meal after your workout. Like only chicken or a salad and no carbs for a while after your workout to keep the body feeding on the reserves.
I'm definitely not recommending no carbs all day. I think a high protein low carb diet is a bad way to go. Everyone I know that has lost a lot of weight doing this has blown up as soon as they go back to eating carbs.

Laura could you send me a pm too. I'm having the same problem, I'd like to know what you did too.

OK OK, my "secret" is pretty much what Dee recommended against. I'm doing high protein, low carb (about 40-50 carbs a day). I've lost almost 10 lbs since Oct. 1. Now, I've been doing this for some time, but the secret to my secret was cutting out all cheating. I had problems on the weekends splurging a bit so the needle on the scale would not budge. Fortunately I live alone, so I eliminated all carbs from the house. That way even when I had cravings or lost discipline, there was nothing to be done about it.

My sample day is something like this:

Breakfast: 2 hardboiled eggs
Lunch: giant salad with some kind of protein
Dinner: broiled lean meat & steamed veggies
Snack: 2-3 tablespoons of PB

I have maybe 3-4 lbs to go. Now, I've done this before & successfully maintained it for 5 years. The question is, how to modify when I reach my goal weight. I don't know if I'll be able to maintain it the same way I did in my pre-40 years.

Good luck to everyone--weight loss is awesome! :)

Thanks for the info Laura! So glad it's working for you. How do you feel? Is your energy level ok with lower carbs?

My Dad and Sis are obese, over 350. They lost tons of weight numerous times doing Atkins. It works but the problem is when you're done. I am curious if you can keep it off because they never could. I hope you can! It's a lot of work and takes a lot of discipline to give up all those carbs.

I'm recommending switching to calorie counting when you reach your goal weight. They didn't do that. There are formulas for figuring out how many calories you can have for your new weight. It will teach you how much you should be eating to maintain your new weight. Good luck!

Laura,

I think a program like Precision Nutrition would work for maintenance.

It's very easy to follow. Eat fruit/ and or veggies with lean protein each meal and limit your starchy carbs to post workout only.
I hate to admit it, but I get super lean when I ditch the starches and limit my fruit. No veggie is off limits though. I can maintain as long as I stick to PN guidelines. Problem is, I love starches!!! I have no doubt I'm carb sensitive.

I'm the opposite, I can't digest fat and protein properly so I eat lots of whole grains, fruit, and carbs. I do one low carb meal a day to get protein in and this helps me maintain my weight. I have no problem maintaining my weight but I know from having an obese family that everyone is different. I thought that a high protein diet for extended periods of time was harmful to the kidneys and digestive system. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not an expert.

I didn't have much problem maintaining when I did it the first time--started Jan 2003, lost 25 lbs in about 8 weeks. After I stayed low carb during the week & ate "normally" on the w/e. Low cal doesn't seem to work for me. My body hates carbs. I mean really HATES them. I just look at a strand of pasta & I gain a pound. :( Anyway, I gained about 10 lbs back when I turned 40 in 2008.

Also I try to do low carb in a healthy way. I don't take it as permission to eat bacon & hamburgers all day, every day--it's lots of lean meats & greens (although I must admit to being thrilled cheese & eggs are an atkins staple :p).

Cynthia, I eat veggies. Lots of veggies. I get a double serving at least 2X a day. Salads are my main meals. Love broccoli, asparagus, cukes, tomatoes........eh, I won't list them all. I agree w/you though--I can live without fruits, but I gotta have my veggies.

Catherine, I had an energy drop the first week or two, but my metabolism seemed to adjust & now I feel fine. What I noticed was a loss in strength, but I think that's more related to the weight loss than the diet. I talked to the nutritionist at the gym, he said weight loss is a trade off. You can be slim & weaker, or stocky & stronger.

I'll take the slim & weak, thank you very much. ;)

I have done Atkins for about seven years. I never "go off" Atkins it is a way of life.

If I eat the way other people eat not only do I feel terrible I get fat.

When others ask about my abstinance from grains and sugar, I tell them I am allergic so they get off my back...its true in a sense. I get groggy and moody and TIRED.

I even limit my fruit.

Once I have lost all the fat I need to I gradually add carbs back in, in the form of fruits and vegg. If I am in a hurry I will add some ezicial bread from time to time.
