I have a year old male cat that is not spade yet and got a kitten back in november. the both of them used the same litter box up until a month ago. the older cat wants to use it in the living floor behind the couches. He only does it when we aren't home or out of the room. I know he is just being stubborn! I caught him sniffing around the dryer in the hall and told him no so he jumped in the litter box and peed. So what can i do to get him to pee in the litter box again? I also clean the box out three times a day so I keep it as clean as possible. Does anyone have any solutions to this? I love this cat and want to keep him in my house.

Get him neutered ASAP. Unneutered males (moreso than unspayed females) are going to have behavioral issues. I can't believe he hasn't been spraying or giving you other trouble until now.

You could try using Cat Attract litter for a while to see if that brings him back to the litter box (but neutering is still necessary).

yes, i think it is time to get him neutered like quick. But i don't get ptaid for a couple of weeks and it is hard to do it till then. i am just hoping that he won't grow a lasting bad habit.

thanks ladies for your help, i think neutering is in the future for him. I wonder if that is why he doesn't like the kitten sometimes? He will also do things to get my attention at night so I will get up and get mad.

thanks,

Is the kitten a male or female?
You should get him neutered (or her spayed) as soon as possible as well.

hi! a behavorial issue most likely but there might be some things you can do to help with that #1 being neutering him as already mentioned:p. You can do a online serach and get some ideas also but a few are if you havent tried them yet :). Have you changed cat litters recently? types? smells?-
have you changed the location of the litter box? do you have a covered litter box? even though covered litter boxes are great for us they are not the best for cats:D. is the litter box next to a noisy location? Is there more that one litter box for each cat plus one ( I know they rec alot huh). is your litter box old? smells can seep into the plactic and stay there. There are also pherome sprays and plug ins that can help with spraying called feliway, and some additives you can add to the litter box called cat attract to make you box smell good to your cat again. You want to use a enyzme type cleaner on the areas the cat urinated on already. Thats all I can remeber off the top of my head:eek: Is there a local humane society in your area that can help with getting him neutered for you;)

You also want to rule any medical reasons out also such as bladder infection/crystals etc even through the spraying is the most likely cause but you dont want to miss these since if he has a medical problem it can be serious so please make sure he is urinating regularly and not having any problems doing it :)Angela

you also might want to try a second litter box so that he doesn't have to share.

Pam

Oops - just noticed Angela already suggested....

Google your local spay and neuter services. They are much cheaper than the vet (but local vets volunteer their services for the procedures) and do a great job. Spays are a little more expensive, but a neuter usually runs around $50. We used these services for our dogs, and saved a bundle compared to what the vet wanted to charge us ($500).

I don't have much experience w/ cats as I'm a dog person but from experience w/ an unneutered male, I would recommend getting him fixed. Our boy and girl dog both were not fixed and he would go crazy when she went into heat. You didn't say if the kitten is a girl or boy but if it's a girl it may cause some stress for you. Our boy got very mean (to us) and we would have to separate them when the girl was in heat. One time we took him over to my in laws who live 10 miles away and put him in a room. Our girl stayed home. He chewed through the door making a hole large enough for him to get out. Unless you want to breed your cat, he and you will be much happier if you get him neutered. Once our dogs were both fixed they were so much more pleasant and all the bad behavior disappeared. HTH

I agree with the two boxes and having him neutered.

We had an adult male (neutered) who was about 5 when we introduced another male kitten (who we neutered as soon as he was old enough).

We set up two boxes right away, two food dishes, two beds etc. They often use the same box, dish, bed, but I think having two is still the right answer.

They are best friends now and the older cat (now 8) still seems to be the cat in charge even though the kitten is probably twice his size (and 3 years old). I think it's great to have two cats so they have a companion. I hope you can get this problem resolved.

Plain and simple - you can't have two cats in one space that aren't fixed. You must get him spayed (and the kitten should be spayed/neutered, as well). It's the responsible thing to do generally, as well. As long as you have it done soon, you should be fine. Two weeks isn't really enough time to develop a habit that can't be broken. Just stay alert and get it done as soon as possible. Remember, this isn't a behavioral problem - this is nature. Nothing more than a two year old who isn't potty trained yet.

thanks ladies for all your advice and i am definitely getting him neutered and yes i have thought of getting him a seperate box. He had no problem using the same box until a month ago and i had a hooded box but just recently took the top off to see if he would pee in the litter. Well he is still peeing everywhere, but knows he isn't supposed to do it. I caught him sniffing around the other day in two different places and told him no both times and he immediately ran to the litter box and peed. so he knows this is something he shouldn't do. So i knew right then that he didn't have a bladder infection and which i was glad.

yeah there is a place that will neuter for 35 dollars and that is probably where i will take him. i can't believe it is that cheap,so that is what i will be doing in a few days. Maybe i will get my old cat back!

Also why has my cat just meow at night and i mean he is meowing to get my husband and my attention. If we don't answer him he gets closer to our door and just meows louder. I think he may need food or something but he doesn't. When we get up in the morning he just acts like he doesn't need anythiing. I wonder if he is just trying to aggravate me. Who knows!

around here there are low cost to free spay/neuter clinics. you could try calling a local animal shelter or a pet supply place like Petco and I'll bet they will know what's available in the area.

The meowing at night may also be because he is not neutered. That may also subside after he is fixed. I have never had an adult unfixed cat but I do know that the feral cats around here are always meowing very loudly at night.

I'm sure that behavior is also tied to his not being neutered.

Each cat should probably have their own litterbox. I have a female spayed cat who goes anywhere but the litterbox and it makes me insane! She's a freak anyway and I know she loves to be outside, but I don't allow it because it's not safe. Try a second box.
