Joint Supplements - Do they work?

Hi Crystal,

I can conclusively say "YES!" to your question!

I started taking a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement last Oct. 2001, initially to offer joint support as I was still extremely heavy at that time, and the combination of weight training and high impact cardio I was afraid would be too much stress for my already overloaded knees.
I noticed an improvement in roughly 3 weeks, my knees seemed to feel better while working out, and the "noise" I would hear during squats and lunges disappeared after about 6 weeks of consistent use.
Well, 2 weeks ago I ran out of my favorite brand (after trying many), Flex-A-Min, and it's a pricier one so with so many financial loose ends at the moment, spending $20. on a bottle wasn't my first priority, so I decided to "test" myself and see if I still needed it. In just two weeks of no use, my knees are already "aching up," and this morning during PowerHour squats I heard "the noise."
So I will be purchasing my bottle of glucosamine-chondroitin w/MSM this weekend before my next lower body weight workout on Monday! Apparently at least for me, it did offer significant joint/cartiledge support, and is worth my taking.

Live and Learn! :)

Now, there are many brands less expensive than the brand I like, and every brand I tried prior to Flex-A-Min I liked and they did just fine.

I haven't taken them and my knowledge so far is only with dogs not people. But the glucosamine/chondriotin has really been beneficial to several of my friend's dogs with arthritis type problems.

I had knee surgery last May and my Dr. told me to take Glucosamine. I take 1000 mg. twice a day. I feel like it has helped alot in my recovery and I'll continue to take it.

Hi,

Our experience with Glucosmine & Chondroitin has been really great. I first heard about it from our vet! Our Lab has hip dysplacia (sp)?. We have actually seen an improvement! It still bows out when he walks but much better then what it was after 6 months!

I started taking it as well. My knees would have a sharp pain during squats and lunges. 3 months later I am pain free. I also take Citracal (calcium supplement).

Hope this helps. I am impressed with the product!

It did not help my husband who has severe osteoarthritis. Basically, he's got bone on bone in his right knee. :-( I can't remember if we've tried the MSM. I've got him on Vit. E, C, and extra calcium now. Only helps a teeny, tiny bit. Or, it could be his arthritis med that helps only a little bit. He's in constant pain.

Why is Flex-a-min your favorite? And is the "noise" in your knee like a crackling kind of?

I have creaky knees. It doesn't really hurt, but I don't think it's good. I tried taking Glu/Chon/MSM, but had a very hard time swallowing the pills 3 times a day. So I found chewables, but they are so danged sweet I can only get one a day down.
