Janet Jackson and Super Bowl ...

I’m a massive Janet Jackson fan. Her new album is realised today, so I’m most excited! Anyway, I know I’m like a year too late, but … that think at the Super Bowl where she exposed her breast. I mean, what was all the fuss about? Her nipple was completely covered. So in my opinion it was no worse than her wearing a bikini. Do I think it was staged? Yep! I have no idea of the time of day it was shown though, so i might feel differently if my young young kids were watching... Here in England we see something like that and think “oh whatever” and that’s it. No fuss. But I understand that it caused a firestorm in America…so my question is…why? I know that America has the world’s largest religious following (isn’t it one out of every two goes to church?), but it also has the worlds largest porn industry. Contradiction?

I agree, Wayne. My parents are from Germany and I've been to Europe several times. When this Janet Jackson thing blew up, I thought, "if this had happened in Europe, people would barely have given it a second thought." And while I think it was in poor taste and don't think she/they should have done it, it really is ONLY a breast, for cryin' out loud. Our family wasn't watching, but if we had been, I wouldn't have freaked out.

America IS a very religious country compared to many other countries. Our culture is influenced immeasurably by our Puritan ancestors, for good and bad. IMO, one of the bad influences is our uptightness about sexuality.

When watching a G-rated Disney movie with my kids, I always think of how much violence (murderous plots and actual, albeit bloodless, murder) there is. But if John Smith, say, touched Pocahontas' breast or something, people would go nuts! (I'm not saying he should, mind you, I'm just noting a contradiction.)

I often nursed my babies in public and got a lot of stares, uncomfortable glances and some comments. Same influences going on.

Thanks for the input Susan. I so agree with you. So much contradication.

I think that cartoons are extremely violent. They show violence as a fun thing. Something to laugh at. Death as something that happens, then you come back to life and start over again.

I find it so amusing … you can show a woman in a tiny, tiny, tiny bikini, just covering the nipple, but show the nipple and all hell breaks lose…

Maybe thats just it, theres so much nudity on TV anymore and profanity, that many people just don't think anything about it. I as a christian do think about it, and I think it is disgusting. I wouldn't say anything, but you posted it.
We are suppose to be mature adults, why do people feel the need to flaunt their nakedness before the world, when many of us don't want to see it, besides this was national TV, thats what cable is for........Rhonda

I think it may have been more about the way the breast was exposed - with Justin Timberlake ripping Janet's shirt off along with the sexual lyrics. It's just more of the "women as sex objects" theme. And the fact that it was aired at a time when children would definitely be watching - it's kind of adult material. I don't know if this would really happen, but I've heard people on talk shows say that they felt they needed to discuss with their daughters that men shouldn't be ripping women's clothes off.

Personally, it didn't bother me, but I can see where it could be a problem for some people. I do agree that it was in poor taste.

I also agree about the Disney movies - so much violence! I would definitely rather my kids see a bare breast then some of the scenes in those movies.

Just thought I had to put in my input on this, when it happened I have to say I laughed, my daughter on the other hand was quite offended at the site and screamed "How Gross!!" and later on it was said she had on a pastie then later it was revealed she had a nipple piercing and it went through the nipple and then around the nipple to give the appearance of a pastie.

Hi Wayne,

I think the real problem was that they did it at the Superbowl, which is considered to be a network broadcast all ages viewing event.

If it happened at the MTV music awards, nobody would've noticed.

I really don’t want to turn this into a religious debate (though I really do appreciate the feed back, thank you). To me I just find the whole thing fascinating. I saw the clip, and thought to myself “is that it?” “is that what all the fuss was about?” A little old metal star covering a nipple. I think, myself, that Justin Timberlake should have apologised too. He did, after all, rip it off. Why should she take all the flack? Cause she's a woman and its her nipple?

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with nudity but there is a time and a place. After hours, i.e. – 9plus should be the time. Most young kids are in bed by then. We live in a society where if we don't like something we have the capacity to turn over (unless of course were talking live TV, as we are),.

Again, I would rather my child (if I had one) see a nipple or a penis than watch people get “ripped apart” all in good old cartoon style. Oh such fun. Really teaches kids the importance of death and its consequences.

I am also a Christian and I did agree with Rhonda. I am not quite sure about rehashing this all over again....I think we went here once already....and no offense meant, just my 2 cents...Carole

I've been to Europe a few times and it is always interesting to me how Europeans do not have the hang ups with the human body that we Americans do.

My first experience was while diving in Bonaire, which is a Netherlands Island. We were diving offshore when a group of people walked up and just took off their bathing suits and started sunning. I was standing there staring, mouth dropped open when my husband brought me back to earth. He said they were probably Norweigians (sp)cause they believe in sunning and swimming in the buff. I wasn't really appalled, I was just surprised. There were children with them and they did the exact same thing. It was so matter of fact and nothing sexual about it at all. It's a cultural thing.

The problem I had was first, this was during prime time T.V. and two, I believe the fact that Justin ripped Janet's shirt off depicted that this type of behavior is acceptable. Now, we as adults (well most of us) know it's not. But what about the children and adolescents viewing this stuff?! "Yeah, boys, it's okay, if you want a feel, just take it" and "Yeah, girls, you're supposed to let them."
It was an act of a man violating a woman just because he wanted to.

Ok, I love Janet as well. And I honestly think that Nelly grabbing himself through out his song was just as offensive, if not more, than what happened with Janet.
Why was it ok for Lil Kim to where that outfit that exposed one of her breasts that the nipple was completely covered up to an awards show, that children do watch, but it wasn't ok for Janet to expose one of her breasts for such a short time I honestly missed it.
Or what about the lyrics of the Kid Rock song or the fact that he was wearing the American flag and then took it off and threw it on the ground? That entire show was offensive in my eyes, Janet was the least of the problems, there were other much more offensive things that were much more noticeable to me, than what she did.
I stand behind Janet on this one. Granted it was in poor taste, it shouldn't have happened, but there were other things that maybe should have been addressed other than what Janet did.

My issue is that people with children did not have a choice wether or not they wanted their children to see it. I think that is the whole point. Most people could care less, but when you have young children viewing that, it is just wrong.

Beth

Well put Beth - I couldn't agree with you more. We had NINE children watching. I should have the choice to let my son watch it or not (which I wouldn't because it was also very degrading to women) and that choice was not available due to Ms. Jackson and Mr. Timberlakes so called "wardrobe malfunction." - YA right!

How many of you out there saying that it wasn't so bad have children and had them watching??? I venture to guess not many.

Just like I exercise my right not to buy any more Dixie Chicks CD's I can do the same for those two.

Dawn

Does anyone still watch MTV? God, I remember when they used to play videos and it was actually fun to watch. Now all there are on that channel are snivelling little college age kids, spoiled rotten, appearing in these really dumb shows. What schlock!
And the awards show! LOL!! I haven't seen anything musically in like 5 years that deserves any kind of pat on the back. Pure crap.

I think anyone who is familiar with it knows that the one "Chick", the portly one, the lead singer I believe, said some stuff against the Iraqi war. Which is her right of course. But it pissed alot of people off so there has been a boycott by some people on buying their cds.
It's funny though that Johnny Depp can just trash the U.S. up and down in an interview and no one says nary a word. Same with that Alec Baldwin. Seems to me he once said he was leaving the country if Bush got elected. It's their right to speak out but I'd love to see how much money these two would make if they could not have their movies seen over here in the U.S. Baldwin in particular proved he's a wuss. I mean, when is he leaving? LOL!!
Also to equate an exposed boob to the American flag being worn as an outfit is apples to oranges. Exposing oneself is considered indecent. The flag thing, although offensive, broke no laws. It's flag ettiquette that was broken in that case.
Both of these people should really try writing some music worth listening to or just fade away from public view.....please! Janet's a has been and Kid Rock is a "never was". He's real good at kissing Aerosmith's asses all the time though. Keeps him on TV....
T. :)
