Heavy weights = long arms

Hello everyone,

I don't know if anyone is thinking like this, but I have this fear that if I lift heavy dumbells I will get long arms. Every time I lift the dumbells feel a pull in my arms and shoulders downwards - I feel like my arms are being stretched. If you have ever seen one of those torture devices where they tied the person to a platform and pull his body length ways you'll know where I am coming from.

Hey, sweet, Yen!

Was cruising the site and saw your post all on its little-bitty lonesome. "Now, that will just not do!", said I.

Anyhow, far as I'm concerned, I'm not worried about the length of my arms. It's only the "long arm of the Law" that gives me pause!

If lifting heavy weights made my arms longer after all these years, I'd be dragging my knuckles on the ground. Wish I did have longer arms, and longer fingers for that matter! Sure would make it easier reaching for the cereal (high fibre, of course, my dear!) on the very top shelf in my kitchen cabinet. I have to get a long knife to nudge the box forward and then try to catch it or duck for cover when it falls on me. Exploding bran (that's BRAN, not BRAIN) -- not a pretty sight!

Hmmm . . . just had a ghastly thought. Maybe all those squats with a heavy barbell are shortening my legs. OH NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patricia (or Pat -- for SHORT)

I never thought about it before, but come to think of it now, on the occasions that I do have to initially pick up a heavier dumbbell, like a 25#db to "set up," there is a downward pull. I don't notice it while using the weight, just maybe moving the weight around, like setting up and putting away. HHHMMMMMM????

Hello Patricia,

How pleased am I to see you've responded? I knew I could always rely on you to 'defend my corner'. Sitting bored at my desk, a lot of things go through my mind: not the intellectual kind, as you have noticed.

Ooooooooooooohhhhhhhh. I'll tell you something that made me laugh yesterday. The picture of Dr. Scott Connelly, of Body RX fame, lifting his shirt to show off his six pack (you'll see it on his website www.bodyrx.com or something). I mean 'What a poser!'. Couldn't he have done it topless? Or with a vest? It was such a sight! I thought to myself 'Flasher'. It was interesting nevertheless and really it's re-hash of something old, something older and nothing new. It's funny how this diet and fitness fad works like a boomerang: you throw it out and it comes back again. (What was said has been said a thousand times before only this time 'It works!' so says our Dr. Connelly and he has testimonials to prove it: I have to say I think I prefer Jason Seahorn before the transformation).

For me, I think I will pass on Body RX for the reason that it's too perfect! It is just another example of society's obession with physical unattainability: people go to such extremes, from grossly obese, almost at death's door to superman! What's wrong with just looking human? Dr. Connelly looks rather odd to me, I mean in his clothes he looks like an ordinary healthy man, out of it....... I don't know. The guy's face doesn't match his physique.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

Yen
