Flax Seeds???

Hi everyone, :) :) :) :) :)
I recently bought flax seeds (actual seeds). They are dark brown. I always hear how great they are, andI tried them on yogurt. They are kind of hard to chew, but they are fresh from a local health food store. Am I supose to cook them or something? Does anyone have any ideas of how to use them? thanks in advance.

I've always heard that cooking destroys the "good fat" in flax seeds. Personally, I just chew them like sunflower seeds. They're okay. Not great, but not yucky.

I put mine in a coffee grinder. They need to be grinded or they will just pass right thru, whole, (if you don't want to spend the time chewing them.) LOL! They are great on salads, smoothies, cereal, yogurt, etc. They come in dark and light(golden) seeds. The golden ones are supposed to be easier on your system, if you get an upset stomache or gas.

thank you both very much for the info. The store didn't offer the ligher color seeds, just dark brown. I think I'll grind them and try them on different things. Are they particularly gassy? I guess all that fiber....:-( When I chewed them (in my yogurt) they seem to get stuck in my teeth. I think I flossed more out than I swallowed. Oh well, I think grinding is the key. I don't have a coffee grinder (being a tea drinker), but I have a mini chopper, but if that doesn't work, I'll have to invest in a mini coffee grinder.
Thanks.

Hi! You can use flax seed as topping on casseroles, toss salads, and baking goods. You can add to ground beef such as meatloaf, spaghetti, and lasagna. Cooking (heating) won't destroy the oils (omgeg-3s). It's the interacting with oxygen that does that. If you want go to WebMD Health and do a search for flax seed. You'll get a wealth of info. :)

You might try doing a search here on flax seed, as there was a thread about it several weeks ago. I also grind mine (about 1/2 cup at a time, to last a few days)with a coffee grinder that I use for nuts and seeds. My stepmother just chews them, but you'll definitely get more out of them if they are ground (don't buy pre-ground, as they don't last as long).

In addition to putting on oatmeal (yummy with maple syrup..especially the golden flax, which tastes a bit nuttier), you can also mix ground flax into protein drinks or smoothies or put it in baked goods like bread, rolls, cookies, muffins. Natural Ovens Bakery has a whole line of baked goods with flax seed meal (ground flax) as an ingredient.

Hey Faythe,

Do you have a blender? I just blend mine in the blender then I add some cranberry juice and orange juice (a juice medley) blend em up some more and just drink the whole concoction down! Quite tasty and refreshing, especially after a Cathe workout :D

Wow, thanks everyone for the great ideas. I was wondering about the cooking and reducing it's benefits. I eat oatmeal and farina a few times a week.

Susan, I have a very old blender, (plan on buying a new one in the next few months), but I think I'll try those fruit smoothies.

And I'll have to check web-md and the prev. Cathe forum links. Thanks

jBy the way, how much is too much???

Hi Faythe,

Not J, but I started with 1 tablespoon and now use 2 tablespoons per smoothie. I never really had a problem with gas from the fiber, but I eat alot of veggies and beans, so I think my body was "adjusted."

Here's some more smoothie recipes that I got from my Mom. I just blend up my 2 tblspns of flax and then follow the rest of the recipe.

2 Tblsns soy or protein powder (I use vanilla)
1/2 c skim milk
1/2 c plain fat free yoghurt (Sometimes I use Strawberry)
1/2 c strawberries (I use frozen)
1/2 med banana
1 1/2 c ice cubes

Blend all together and YUMMY!!!

One more.

2 teaspoons chocolate syrup
3/4 c skim milk
1/2 med banana
1 teaspoon peanut butter
1 teaspoon honey
1 1/2 c ice cubes

Blend all together with your flax and it tastes like dessert!

Hope you enjoy!

Susan
