how does someone get or find someone to help you get your finances in order? I am sick and tired of robbing from peter to pay paul every pay period. meaning struggling each pay period to get things paid. I am tired of it. I want to get my bills paid off and pretty much be debt free except for my house payment. I get frustrated at myself because I cant stop spending money and for no reason . I am addicted to shopping i guess. any tips

I highly recommed Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey. You can find classes in your area or he offers the course online. He also has a book with a lot of the same info - Total Money Makeover. Both are excellent. My husband and I completely changed our finances after doing this course. Dave Ramsey is a Christian and he does mention Christian principles during the course but it's not constant. Maybe 5 - 10% of the course is that kind of stuff. His financial advice is sound and if you do what he recommends you will get out of debt. Good luck!

Jean Chatzky has some great tools on Franklin Covey. Her Get-out-of-Debt Kit is pretty good, as is the Savings Kit and her books. It's pretty no nonsense.

Financial advisors are either for when you have some money to invest and are being paid for their time, or they are paid if a commission if they sell an investment, insurance or product.

There are many non-profit consumer counseling companies, I have had pretty decent experience with Money Management International but it always depends on your counselor.

Suze Orman!!......www.suzeorman.com

Check out her "Resource Center" on her website.....and she all about getting woman on board....after all, it's all about a good credit score!!!! You can do it!

Something that worked for me when I was younger and needed to get my money house in order was:

1. Make a solid list of all my NECESSARY monthly expenses.
2. Set up my paycheck for direct deposit and have the monthly expenses amount directed to checking. Everything else went into a savings account that WAS NOT TO BE TOUCHED. ;):) That became my "long term goal" fund, which at that time was buying a house.
3. The credit card was only to be used for gas and emergencies.

Once I got disciplined enough to stop using shopping as my main sport, that savings account started building up nicely. You can do it!!

Another vote for Dave Ramsey. He is awesome.

Look at all of your credit card bills and check the interest rates on them. Pay the one with the highest rate first, making substantial payments on it and small, regular payments on the rest. Get an AmEx card and use only that one. They require that you pay your balance at the end of each month. It will force you to discipline yourself and only charge items you can pay within your monthly budget. When it comes to saving, pay yourself FIRST!

thanks for all the tips. I definately need to do something. I really dont want to have to worry about money pay period to pay period. thanks again

No one has suggested Gail Vaz-Oxlade yet, probably because she's Canadian and not as well known here. She has a show called "Til Debt Do Us Part" that runs on CNBC if you get cable.

A lot of the couples on her show have overspending problems like what you describe. Watch a few shows and see if her planner might work for you.

Dave Ramsey

Another vote for Dave Ramsey - being debt free is amazing! I can live on very little & be perfectly happy. I have one credit card that I use because it's a cash rewards card, but I don't keep a balance. I also like Clark Howard.
