I was wondering if anybody knows about the energy bars out on the market today. There are sooooo many of them out there and I know that some are full of sugar and 'bad' carbs. Any ideas on some "GOOD" energy packed ones?
Hi Marcia - I like Luna Bars. They have soy protein, vitamins, etc., and best of all, they support breast cancer research! Yes, they are tasty (try cherries over chocolate or sweet dreams). YUM!!! Only 180 calories, too. Suzanne
It depends on what you need them for. Meal replacement, fuel during endurance work, or a glycogen top off just before a workout when you haven't eaten for hours. Better add an easy way to boost protein for those that are consuming lots of protein.
So the first step is to determine why & when you need an energy bar. We have Power Bars, Clif bars, Luna bars & gels in our "cookie" jar.
And you know who has a pretty tasty meal replacement bar? Avon!
They have like 4 varieties, 3 of them are 180 cal/5g fat
and one bar is 200 cal/5g fat and all bars have 10g protein. They really are pretty good, I was surprised. I keep one or two for emergency road purposes. When we're driving to visit my parents and the temptation of all the places to pull over and eat jump up, I can pull out a bar and a bottle of water and have a filling snack that can hold me until I get there or back home. Better than stopping for chips or fast food!
I also like the Luna bars. However, they tend to have a bit more sugar than some of the others. However, they taste AWESOME!!!!!! I also really like the Apex bars. Not sure if they have them where you live? I get them at my club. I think they also have a website online. They tend to have less sugar. Their oatmeal raisin bars are wonderful!!!!
I agree that it really depends on what you need them for. If you just need the glycogen boost before a workout on an empty stomach then the Luna would probably be fine. I also like the Luna bars for when I crave sweets or chocolate. It is like eating a candy bar. Whenever my 2 year old takes a bite he says "candy" so they must be good
Hi - I really like Promax bars (4g fat, 20 g protein for most) and Balance Gold bars in Chocolate Peanut Butter and Caramel Nut Blast (these are as close to candy bars as energy bars have come-yummy!) but they do have some sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
I also like Clif bars and their Luna bars if I am in the mood for a more "grainy" type bar.
There is a brand of low carb energy bars that are good, but I can't think of the exact name right now. I'm positive they are made by EAS - the Body For Life folks. Look for them, i think they have Carb somewhere in their name.
I'm sure I'm going to hear it for this, but I get the Slimfast Meal Replacement bars - the oatmeal raisin ones, & I like them just fine! My store has them for 89 cents each, and I use them for emergency rations.
Labrada makes some pretty good bars, they have a ton of protein (20-30 g maybe?)and they make a line of really low-carb ones sweetened with sucralose. Chocolate peanut butter is pretty good. But Labrada also makes a bar, Texas Pecan Pie, that is so delicious it tastes like a candy bar to me. Not sure if it's very low carb tho,
I think keeping them around for emergency rations is a great idea! That's why I got meal replacement bars. I think it's better in a pinch to eat one of those than to skip a meal (like lunch) and be so hungry in the evening you eat everything you see! And it's certainly better than driving thru for fast food because you're on the run and can't really stop!
They come in handy, I don't need to use them often, but when I do, I feel so much better about my choice than I would if I had gotten a burger and fries!
I have a new one for you My friend just let me have and try one of hers yesterday and it is WONDERFuL!!!!!!
It is a new EAS Myoplex Lite bar. It is called the Peanut Caramel Crisp w/choc coating. It is similar to the LUna nuts over chocolate but even BETTER! It doesn't have any of that after taste and has more of a maple taste. I think it is sooooooo good It has 180 calories, 4.5g fat, 15g protein, and 26 carbs. So it is a true meal replacement. Throw in a piece of fruit and it also is a good afternoon or morning meal
I am not sure what other flavors they have but I am definitely going to be on the lookout for them I Think you can get them online at EAS.com or at GNC etc.
p.s. I also like the promax rocky road or cookies n cream bars too
