Birth Control - Nova Ring

Timber99

Cathlete
I read about this form of birth control in another post and wondered if anyone out there uses it and what your experience has been. I am thinking of switching off of the pill and am considering this after having done some research.

Thanks,
Christine

It is an excellent form of birth control. Small flexible ring which stays in the vagina for 3 wks and then out for one week when you have your period. Can leave it out for up to 3 hours per day.
Hormones are similar to the ones in birth control pills.
Low side effect of breakthrough bleeding.

Don't laugh...could it get stuck? And does it lessen the symptoms of your cycle? I take birth control not only to "not" have a child but b/c I have horrible, painful symptoms without it.

I did try it for a week. First a little info...although I have taken BC pills at different times in my life, For the last few years I have not been able to find a pill that doesn't make me feel awful ( even ones I had taken before). so the doctor suggested the ring. I had an awful headache for a week and finally had to take the thing out. As for getting stuck...well...lets try and not be gross here...There was a bit of a suction effect that made it difficult to get it out and I had some trouble since I do have short fingers ( I will leave it at that). Hope that's not TMI.

Hi Christine, I have been on Nuvaring for about 18 months. I had previously been using a diaphragm as I had tried BC pills when I first got married and I hated them. I was familiar of course with how the diaphragm was inserted and I didn't have any problems with it. So when I read about Nuvaring I thought it might be worth a shot. After 20 yrs of the diaphragm it started to take the spontaneity out of sex. I talked to my Doctor about it and being 43 at the time we thought it wouldn't be a problem as I am getting near the end of my cycle. I have had no bad reactions in any way. Yes on occasion when you first insert it once in awhile I have had it come out. Now I can normally tell if its in right from the feel. Once in believe me it stays even during intercourse. It has not bothered my DH in any way either and he does like the spontaneity back in our sex life...:)...I also have had much lighter periods, where as before I sometimes had accidents at night as my flow got heavy. Not now! I also know right when my cycle will start. Which I find really nice as I run long races on Sat or Sun and my cycle starts on a monday. Running a marathon during your cycle is not fun at all! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. You can email me if you don't want to post personal things here...Carole

I used it for two months and had to get rid of it. The headaches I got from it were atrocious!

Christine:

I am half an hour back from my gyne appt at which my nice new doctor with whom I am very impressed has prescribed the Nuvaring for me. So I can't tell you yet how I will react to it, but I can tell you why she prescribed it for me and not bcp's.

I suffer from terrible PMDD and depression with some panic disorder thrown in for good measure. My menstrual cycle clearly affects my mood and makes life hell from day 15-31 of my cycle, with it being true hell and back in the last week. So we were looking for a way to help keep the hormone levels steady throughout the month, to prevent the cycling up and down of hormone levels, whose fluctuations cause the mood disorder of PMDD. She told me Nuvaring will suit me better than bcps, because even with bcp's there is still some fluctuation during the day of the level of hormone in the blood due to your metabolism's dynamics, and this fluctuation does not occur with the Nuvaring, whose discharge of hormone is constant since it need not be digested, being absorbed through vaginal tissue.

So, we are hopeful. I truly am.

Does this sound of any use to you? You can check back with me in a few months' time and see if I am still screaming or screaming even louder!!!!!

Edited to add: having used a diaphragm for years, I am totally OK with touching the inside of my body and "fishing" around for the stray item (TMI?!?!?!?!). If you are someone similar, the Nuvaring could work for you.

Clare,

You will have to keep me updated! My trouble is that I must be sensitive to the hormones b/c even a few minutes lateness on BCPs makes me spot and have issues. That is getting old very quickly! I have been on them forever and I need to make a change b/c it's never been 100%.

I actually made an appointment with my doctor to discuss the use of a new birth control method. I am thining that the ring or the patch will do me better than the pills.

Christine

Oh and Christine, I forgot to add, my Gynecologist has said that what I should do, aged 38 and totally sick of mood disorders, is use three or four rings consecutively and not bother to go for a week without the ring in order to have a period after three week's ring usage. Then after 3 or 4 rings used consecutively, then to go for a week without. The aim is to keep hormones as steady as posible and keep fluctuation to a bare minimum. I am sold on this idea, as long as the ring works for me.

What are your "issues"? Or would you rather not say? That's OK, if it's personal. I understand.

Clare:)

My basic issue is that if I am even a bit late, I spot for days. So a lot of times, I am using feminine products for 1.5 - 2 weeks per month. That is awful.

I also tend to get used to the pills rather quickly. At least that is the explanation that my doctor gives me for this. At some point, I will start getting my period on day sooner. The next month, it is three or four days sooner. When it happens, it doesn't end any sooner...just gets longer b/c it starts earlier. It goes so on and so forth until I have it for like 1.5 - 2 weeks and then I call the doc and get a new one.

Thanks to all for your input. I am dying to hear how you are doing on the ring and how it works out for you! To use it, I honestly need to get over the whole insertion and removal thing :0 I have no experience with that but I think I can deal with that after a while.

Thanks again!
Christine

Christine:

I see. I have never had experience with that bleeding issue at all. I'm always late and light and short, which is ideal and kinda makes up for the other s**t I deal with! You know, insertion and removal should be no big deal, after all, it's your own body, right? If you can insert and remove a tampon, you'll be fine. I wish you luck, actually, I wish us both luck!

I hope the Nuvaring works for you. I have really liked it. I can relate also with touching the inside of my body, once I got used to the diaphragm it was never a problem. I don't at all have the same side affects I did so many years ago on BCP. But, they were probably stronger way back then...:)...Carole
