Anyone else make their own Tempeh?

I cannot buy it where I live. I ordered the starter. Read lots of stuff on it. Right now I have dehulled and split the soybeans and have them back on the stove. I am hoping to try my slow cooker on warm and put a rack in it and have it work. It is either that or a drop light in an ice chest. Any ideas for incubating it?

Hi:
i am allergic to soy but I do sprout and incubate many things. do you have a dehydrator? the excalibur is a box style is awesome for fitting in big glass bowls. although less consistent, you could try warming up your oven and then turning off prior to putting the tempeh in. I hope that helps, I don't know how picky tempeh is. i am really curious so please update to let us know how it works! I might try it someday for my kids. good luck :)

I read that you can make tempeh out of other types of beans and it does not have to be the traditional soybeans. I had to order those from Amazon after several stores around here did not have any. My oven starts at 170. Tempeh needs to be around 85-91 degrees. Most say around 88 degrees. I have read different ways of getting that temp. Like a light bulb with a dimmer switch hung in a cabinet, a spare bathroom with a space heater. I will come up with something. I was going to try the ice chest lined with foil and my husband's drop light but I can't find the drop light. This is my first attempt so if it doesn't work I will come up with something.

That is a similar temp. to starting seeds. Instructables has many, many step by step tutorials for setting up ways for the seedlings and dirt to be just the right temp. You're sure to find something. I remember one of them used rope Christmas lights. Hope that helps.

For the temperature turn on your oven to its lowest setting. Put an oven thermometer inside (one that doesn't have a probe). Wait for the temp to come down, place your item inside, close the door. It should stay warm for a while. This is a technique also good for proofing yeast in a cold area (like my house right now.) I learned it from my mom.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up using my slow cooker that has a warm setting. I warmed it then put the tempeh in on a steamer rack and then unplugged the crockpot. Periodically I would take the ceramic pot out and warm it back up a little then sit it back in. The second evening I set the crock in the cabinet where my furnace is because it stays warm in there and I knew the furnace would run a lot at night. It took 48 hours and it came out nice and white without the dark stuff. I steamed some and put it in the freezer after refrigerating to stop the process. This morning I had a dish from the Brazil Butt Masters book that was a tempeh hash. I subbed sweet potato for the potato. It was yummy:)

Rapid Breath, the oven is a good idea too. I would only be able to heat it a little while because it's low temp is 170. I have put a pan of hot water in my oven to raise bread.
