? about lunges

Hi Cathe and educated crowd :)

My question is about the depth of lunges, both static and front or back.
I notice that my lunges are not as deep as those on the workouts and I'm wondering if this is a flexibility issue, a "still have some weight to lose" issue, or a form issue?
I know I'm going deeper than I was a year ago, but still, my knee is no where near as close to the floor as those on the videos.
Will my lunge get deeper with time and increased flexibility? Or should I be forcing myself to go deeper each workout until I get my knee where it should be? Or does the depth matter as much as correct form?

Thanks for insight and/or input,

Donna

Hi Donna! Your form is most important. You want to strive towards having a 90 degree angle on both the front and back leg. The front knee will be lined up over the ankle (no further than the big toe). The back knee should be lined up beneath the pelvic area. Now depending on your range of motion, you may be able to lunge down a bit deeper (but the back knee should not touch the floor), but it is not necessary, especially if it is uncomfortable to you. Generally speaking, the greater flexibility you have, the greater range of motion you will have, so if you have noticed that you are going down lower than you have in the past, chances are over time you will gain even greater flexibility in this area. Take Care!
